And my old 92 Ferd needs some more R12. Of course theres none of that around anymore but im seeing this suff called 12a. Anybody been down the road with this stuff? Does it werk, or do i go the 134a route? Either way im looking at a new dryer and expansion tube.
I still gots my A/C but it's clear out in the barn now.

stay home where it's cool! i haven't been around or heard about the 12A yet. most all my stuff has the 134A in it. it does fine. glad to see you back again...need you back more often...i promise i won't poke you to bad for a couple days. still gots my wagon?

I'd do the 134,but with a caution.
 Ford compressors had powder coated internals and that coating would wear off over time and clog things up in the orifice and and dryer.
 For some reason the 134 seemed to make it happen more often.Don't know if it was the refrigerant or the ester oil you have to use with it.
 Flush the system out thoroughly what ever you use.

Les, in the past when I helped folks out that had R 12 systems, I used a product called freeze 12.  Check it out.  It always worked for me in the 12 systems.

Let us know how it worked out.

  I have not heard of any product out there that replaces the old R12 except for the R134,,,not to say there isn't,,but be careful bout putting anything other that the approved R134 as you'll prolly get into issues with warrantees on the rest of the parts of the system and such.
 IF the system had been workin with the R12 and is just low,,,,That's good! I would evacuate the R12 , then replace at a minimum, the dryer, and orifice tube (or expansion valve) and flush the whole system especially the condensor,, as that is where all the gookies wind up and and if it is some plugged up the whole system will prolly not work and will most likely cause the compressor to fail bucking so much back pressure. You'll have to get some of the special oil for the R134,,but it not expensive,,,ClapClap

The 12a worked well for me in the Gleaner combine. The up town air conditioner fixers poop poop it. But that is cause they are to catch all the juice when they open a air system up. If they don't know about it,it contaminates their machine and the other juice they have in it. Wink And the 12a stuff is very flammable cause it generally has some propane in it. But with all net and the reporting of all things bad, I have never come across a story of the air conditioner fluid being the cause of a fire. Wink  But gas and diesel fuel are not that good if your ride is on fire ether.LOL 


But not knowing how easy it is to find 12a today and the price difference of it from 134a may be better to move on to 134a. Wink But since there is a newer than 134a stuff being used maybe skip all the in between and move all the way to the newest.Wink But I know NOTHING, "NOTHING" about this new stuff. And I have no working air conditioning in anything other than my Wonderful s car. But the combine would if I where going to sit in it.

Got two with the R12 systems that are not working, IF I fix them I will switch over to R134. I used Freeze 12 in one and it worked okay for a while. got a clogged expansion valve now.
Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God.

If you can find the HC-12a, use it, it is compatible with all the hoses and seals, I would start with an 80% charge, add more if needed.  The propane additive, (very small amount), is to keep the oil moving through the system which was no problem with R-12.  As for flammability,  12a has to get over 850 degrees to burn because the main component is isobutane mixed with a few other hydrocarbons.  Bear in mind, any refrigerant is flammable if mixed with oil and at the right temperature.

Hubert; refrigerant is an excellent cleaner and degreaser,  many electronics are dipped in boiling refrigerant to clean off assembly contaminants such as oil from human hands.  You can probably remove the cone shaped screen, clean it, reinstall, vacuum and go again, that screen protects the valve.
