2005 F250, trying to take the tail gate off. remove support cables, lower gate about 1/2 way, lift right end out, so far so good. slide gate to right to remove....I said slide gate to right! nothing doing! what am I missing? does it need to be in a specific position to slide out? none in the past have, but, doesn't matter, I have tried every conceivable position, from full up to full down. It goes up and down smooth, but seem REAL solid left/right!

They started selling spacers that clamp into that space back when tailgates got so expensive and people were stealing them. The one on my F350 has two half’s and a little hard to get to Allen screw to hold it together. You must remove it to shift the gate over to remove. I’ll bet yours has one too

that anti lock clip keeps you from lifting the RIGHT side out of the track.. I think Lou has that arready off... Your right Lou, it SHOULD just slide an inch to the right and pop out of the socket...Dont know how you would put a retainer clip on that side.. Normally it is just a short tube inside another tube.. a inch long

Right, that side (right) is lifting out OK, just wont slide sideways. I even put a 4x4 on it and gave it a 'nudge' with a 3 pounder. It laughed at me! felt real solid

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.

Well Bob, that is usually my first inclination! I polled the crew here just so I wasn't missing something, like maybe it had to be in a certain position to remove, like the right side, before I went postal on it. I got it out, but not without a significant fight! The open end of the 'pin', the part on the bed had a slight bell, or widening diameter! The 'socket' or the part on the gate had a plastic bushing. I suspect the slight wider diameter in the pin wore a groove on the plastic bushing. Now, I wonder how big the fight will be when it comes time to reinstall the gate |

A friend had a brand new 99 that he babied and we could NOT get his tailgate off, no way, no how... he'd never taken it off in 15 years... What happens is the left side 'hinge' piece on the tailgate rusts and expands and tightens the plastic really, really tight into the box part of the hinge. If you get real lucky a lot of super thin 'oil', several times a day for a week, might, MIGHT free up the hinge, maybe, Now when (if) you get it off.. clean up everything, add a lot of never-sieze, and then once a month or so REMOVE the tailgate and regrease the hinge...

naw, some 'engineer' thought ( didn't KNOW) it was a better idea... as it was cheape to make, the bean counters approved it and it gave the 2nd cousin of a mgr a job to make the plastic bushings... it'd be interesting to know how many pickup owners here ACTUALLY have taken their tailegates off.....

grind the heads off the 8 Torx bolts, remove 2 screws from filler pipe, undo the wiring connectors, lift box, toss 4b4 under each corner ,then use forklift to remove.... I was going to do that to get to leaky gastank...was.... mechanic said he'd do the repair on the hoist , so HE can get dirty..... I KNOW the bed cross rails will be toast after 20+ years..don't need anymore krappy jobs..

actually Jay, this tailgate is pristine, bed is rotting off, but the tailgate is near prefect. I think the plastic got a groove or ridge worn in it and was sticking
