So I have about a 1 acre spring fed pond that is stocked with channel cat, hybrid bluegill, black crappie, walleye, and thousands of fathead minnows. Yesterday I took time to throw a line in and right in front of me were about a half dozen of these little fish. I’ve never seen anything like them. They appear to be bottom feeders but I have no idea and nobody yet that I’ve showed the picture to had any idea what they are. So check the picture and what’s your guys thoughts?

Sorry picture isn't posted very clear but the rings are tan and the rest would be dark color of a catfish fry.  these are about 2-3 inches long.

When I think of this, can't help but think of Gene Tracey.  He told a story 'bout them sumbiches in washington.  The Anacostia river was so polluted, back in the late 60's, they importated like a half a million Coho salmon, to try to clean it up.  Didn't work so they tried Walleye, same story.  Then they tries breeden the 2, Still nuthin! An then they brought in muskie, still no luck, so they tried a 3 way cross-breed, , called the Cowalski.  Did alright, in the pollution, but they hadda teach 'em how t'swim...Wink

Hopefully they're not a problem. Probably either got dumped by someone or accidentally hitched a ride with a bird, if there's no upstream source? They do make me think of koi or something decorative but I don't know what they are.

Well I sent a picture to a friend that took it to the fish and game office at a lake, they told him that it looks like a catfish and they think the tan belts around them are something about algae maybe or a chemical, but they said they would send pics to a biologist and see what he thought.  They aren't koi because they have no scales and by the looks of the tail they wouldn't be channel cat I don't think.

Don't think they're a problem only seen a few as I was standing by the bank, and there is no upstream source.  This is basically a spring fed pit pond.

Definitely look like a catfish, or maybe a bullhead.  Bullheads are smaller than a cat and darn good eatin.  That orangish color is something else.  Maybe a fungus? on em.  Bullheads are bottom feeders and will keep a pond real nice and clean.
