    Posted: 25 Mar 2019 at 8:25pm
My son has a slant 6 in a 1984 dodge ram 100. 59000 actual miles. We drove it home after setting in a garage for 3 years . We had a lot of mouse damage work to do and did a lot of tune up work. It has a double magnetic pickup in the distributor instead of points. Body is no rust and only a dent in the tailgate with a great interior ! The person we got it from is a close relative so I know all of the mileage is true.
Problem is after removing the dist. to put in new mag pick up we set out to time it and found 3 different marks on the harmonic balancer. One is a double notch on damper and back pully and the other two are single marks on the damper. Which mark do we use to set timing . Thanks Jim

I don't know about the timing marks, but if it quits going down the road, suspect the little pickup attachment inside the distributator. Dad had one that would just die going down the road. By the time they got it towed to the dodge dealer it would start and run. He finally left it there, they used it to run around town. It died a week later while sitting outside the shop door. That's when they found the problem.

If you have the distributor stabbed correctly or there abouts I would go with the one showing up with the timing light. The double one is probably used for checking the timing with a magnetic probe.
My info says 16 BTDC at 725 rpm w/vacuum advance disconnected.
Air gap for the start pickup is .006 (closest to the vacuum advance)
Run pickup air gap .012

Tom we replaced that part. Fixer the new part is set to your specs. Now if we remove the plugs so we can rotate the engine by hand and find tdc on the #1 piston can we mark the balancer at the 0 point of the gauge on the truck and start from there. On the btdc I've
seen from 16 btc to 2 btdc. We were trying to get 10 btdc. Does any of thtis make sense?
Also there is no vacumn on the distribtor. I did remember that needed to be unhooked but there isn't one on it. Could there one someway working from the carbeurater? I seem to remember reading about that but van't find it now. Thanks to both of you !Jim

Hey Fixer,,,,readin this thread has again reminded me I been wantin to ask you a question bout something.
I have a 3 cylinder 1000CC engine I took out of a 1990 Geo Metro for one of my many projects. I had read an article somewhere but misplaced the dang download ,,,!! The article was from a feller that had taken this same engine and used a Ford Duraspark box and coil to trigger the distributor to fire. The distributor has two black plastic Kidney shaped "modules" inside with two wires coming out of or TO the distributor,,one brown and one Black W/yellow stripe. Distributor also has TWO vacuums.  I had the engine runnin before I took the engine out, so I know the distributor was firing the plugs with the electrical system on the car.
I didn't want to "experiment" and wind up burnin up some parts,,,,,,Wink
  You got any ideas???

Joe if you downloaded the article to your computer, you should be able to search your computer for key words in the files or file names. Example search for Geo Metro, or Ford Duraspark, or 3 cylinder 1000CC etcetera etcetera etcetera. My search App is in the lower left of toolbar and is a circle O icon.  Win10

Don't forget to adjust the valves on that little 225. A lot of people didn't know you had to adjust the valves every once in a while cause it had a solid lifter cam in it. Those little engines were before their time. I had a lot of customer's when I was in the Auto repair business in the 70's that had Valiants, Skamps, and whatever with the slant 6's in them and the body would fall off the chassis before the engine quit. If you took care of those engines keeping the oil clean, adjusting the valves, and tossing a Distributor into them once in a while, (they would eat Distributors on occasions) 150K miles was not out of the question. Even back then! Had a lot of customer's with way over 100K on them engines. Good engine to hotrod to!...

Buddy had his Aunts Coronet four door with a deuce and quarter in it. Had valve noise so we set them but once set had piston knock(per my dad), pulled oil pan to see if was visible where found a bad rod bearing(was hanging out both sides of the cap. Left pan off, drove that oil less critter around for three hours trying to lock it up, finally once got back to his house lost enough compression would not stay running, NEVER once did it try to lock up and we smoked literally every bearing in it.

Hey Chask,,,,,thanks for thet tip,,,,but true to form me,,,,,,I often like to make the very same mistakes enough times to get me really pee'ed enough to get really pee'ed at myself,,,,,,Wink
As you know,,,in Win10 when you download a document you then get a window where Win10 has assigned a title "document" in whatever text you want and gives you an option to change the Doc name to whatever you want as long as it fits their parameters,,,,I usually,,,and I mean USUALLY assign a name to the doc that will remind ME which DOC it is,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
don't forget I said,,,,,"usually",,,,I must have several hundred docs,,,,ALL of them named "document",,,,,,But,,,that is not what happened on this one,,,,Ya see,,,,,,
I don't think you were visitin with us yet,,,but a couple of years ago,,I started havin the dangest issues with Microsoft and their FRIGGIN updates locking up my computer,,I mean every update for bout 3 years and cost me over $300 to get it back up and running by a computer guru downtown. Well,,the latest upgrade bout 4 months ago was all my poor old putor could stand and finally gave up the ghost and would not reboot. I have filed a "Customer Protest"  with Microsoft to replace my desktop and have been assigned a case number. I had to buy another desktop,,,,,,,cause,,,,cause,,,I dould;nt do without youse guys constant banter ,,,,,,,WinkWinkWink
I'm almost positive that doc I need is on the other hard drive,,,,,,,

Joe I do remember you having win10 problem city every update. Ain't life a Beeoch at times. I bum when I think of info that I've lost, I now copy every thing to a separate terabite drive periodically with a program call Roadkils Unstoppable Copier 5.2.

It's free I believe.

The program can be used as a daily backup system using its batch mode functions. A list of transfers can be saved to a file and then run from the command line to perform the same batch of transfers on a regular basis without having to use the GUI interface. The program supports command line parameters which allow the application to be run from schedulers or scripts so it can be fully integrated into daily server tasks.

I'm using Windows 7 version on my Win10

Them old slant 6's were a damn good motor.  My grandmother had a 67 valiant with one in it, and I hadda 79 D-100 p/u, that I went to the u of Md in, how that truck outlasted my foolish youth beats me.  I had put 3 motors in it, by the time I got rid of it, got to be about a 1/2 day job, to swap out.  deleted the emissions stuff, beat the innards outta the cat converter, got ran into, head on, in Annapolis, one day, I pulled the fender well outta the tire, with a big wrench, drove it home, and un-mangled the fender, by a high speed reverse into a telephone pole.  When I finally got another truck, the junkyard took it, later I was told by them, that everything in it was so wore out, that iy was only worth scrap, which was about nuthin, at that time...

As for the distributor, I don't think I ever touched mine, other than a tune up or 2.  That 1 dizzy was used on all 3 motors...Wink

I had a 76 AMC Hornet that I bought new and right off the bat I had trouble with the then new electronic ignition.  Every 4-5 months the car went back to the dealer so they could do their thing.  Finally the warrantee run out and I replaced that electronic ignition distributor with one out of an older junk car with the old points and condenser set up.  I think I had to add a ballast resistor if I remember right.  I drove that car for many more years with no problems.  Maybe that is a possibility for that 225.

One thing I learned about them old Dodges and Plymouths,  I learned to carry a new "ballast resister"  with me all the time.   Sooner or later you was going to need it.

Yes an older former mechanic told us about those and we replaced it and put one in the glove compartment. I still wonder about not having a vacumn on the distributor.

84 was the first year for electronic ignition for Dodge, the rest of the 'Big 3" followed suit in 85.
As far as not having a vacuum advance, it was there version of computer controlled advance. Some had it and some didn't. They usually left the BS off the bigger trucks and took the straight forward approach. That didn't come till later when the crack down on emissions kicked in and things got ugly.

GOT IT GOING ! It runs great but we needed help . We towed it to a modern shop that specializes in foriegn vehicles but has 2 old guys (over 70 like me almost ) who come in 2 days a week and work on older vehichles . For $130 towing and all it runs like a top. He said we did all things right except we weren't getting tdc correct.
Anyway the owners said to not sell it without contacting him ! They don't see trucks of that vintage w that low a mileage and tnat great a body and interior ever !
Thanks guys !
