I've been wondering if we might be treated to some fresh moo-cow pictures. They look great. Mom looks very proud.

I thought you'd be the first one to see the pictures. LOL! We're up to 7 new ones now. When the weather shapes up so we can get them out of the barn, I'll post up some more pictures. Darrel |

A dumb question, but, would a female dog be able to alert you when a cow ready to calf? I would think that a good dog could help keep watch at this time.

That is a good question, Unit 3. I do know that you don't want dogs any where near mama cows with calves. Especially with me in the pen. The cow will chase the dog, and the dog will run behind me. Not a good place to be. My wife has a little jack russel that is, as we call him, a tender ninny. Most timid dog I ever seen. Scared of his own shadow, but likes to think he's tough when there is no un-favorable outcome possible. I keep telling this doggy that he needs to learn how to check cows, but so far he hasn't listened. Darrel |

Yep, the only reason for a dog around is if you want to get Momma away from the baby for some reason. Just open the barn door and then tell the dog to 'sic em' and as soon as the dog gets close enough,,,,,,,,,,,that ole cow will chase her right out of the barn!! You just shut the door and take care of the calf. Ya ever try and pick up a calf with Momma right there?? I still hurt! and that was 40 sum years ago...
