Happened upon a Kubota T 1600 garden tractor that ran good for a reasonable price. Bought it to install the engine in one of my 720's. We've been working on it for about a month a day or maybe 2 each week. Got to run it yesterday and got to drive it today. Engine is a 14 1/2 hp engine. A few little tweaks and some work on the paint and it will be ready for show season. Den

Very well done! How bad was the process? Other than notching the frame by the battery was there a lot of modifications needed to get it to fit?

Process not too bad. Yes, notched the frame for the radiator. Also cut
out the floor under the motor for the diesel oil pan. Did not have to cut out the mounting bolt holes for the Onan. Other than the dash, the whole process can be reversed and it can be an Onan 720 again. I actually bought a different dash just so I could have everything to put it back if necessary. Den |

Boy that thing is shoe horned in there! A shame that it has less power than the original. Can you fit a turbo on it anywhere?

Do you still have access to all the same hydraulics like the front couplers for the front blade? Dave

No Dave (NE) we did not keep the front hydraulics. For this project (show
tractor) we did not want to fight getting new piping to the front past the engine and we thought that hoses would be ugly. Total sacrifices on this conversion include the front hydraulics, foot clutch, both PTOs. Without major alterations to the frame and hood, the PTOs and clutch are out. When we did the narrow front on the 720, we lost nothing. The one item the narrow front end eliminated was the snow blower both for the weight of the thing and the drive shaft set up. Den |

Say, Den, do you bring your 720's to Hutch? Be neat to see them there. Dave

Probably less HP by virtue only of the shaft RPM. It would be more sprightly with the 3-cyl 25hp underhood, but it'd be a little more work to make it fit. FWIW... I pulled a flat-twin onan 19 out of my skid-steer, and am putting in a 3-cyl Kubota in it's place... Not a good idea to put boost on the littleBotas. If the diesel doesn't have enough power, put the gas/spark head and a carb on it, and spin it faster.

Oil cooler in is now a flat oil cooler that is mounted below the hydro on the
bottom of the tractor. Tried to keep it in the same spot for looks if nothing else but could not clear everything. Den |
