Ah, here we go again. This time it's the garage reroof. Had 3 pros quote on total job. strip, repair 2 foot damage,ice/water,25yr shingles. All 3 pro companies said 1 day job, $3000. $1,000 in material. main is 7/12 pitch ,bumpout is 3/12 so 100 ice/water. So... the 'contractor' StepSON gets the job. He started last Friday. Started, consisted fn ME having to unload his truck of the skid of shingles. 1st I had to bodge the neutral start switch on the forklift, and he was 'impatient' about that. great....oh well, it'll be done by Monday right ? WRONG..... HE doesn't work weekends. Monday came and went, though he dropped off dump trailer Shows up Tuesday,I have to get MY ladders back from great neighbours that I'd loaned them to as the 'contractor' didn't bring his....so neighbours are not 'happy'. He takes 3 days to ALMOST finish 1 side of the main roof, yesterday quit at 3:15,.started at 9ish. I'd at least cutoff the flappy overhanging ends off the shingles BEFORE Mother Nature sees them. Oh well...he's the pro, right? Supposed to be here today to cut/trim and reinstall the solar system.I figure 1/2hr to trim the ends, 1 hr to hookup the solar (that I did 20 yr ago).He and son will probably take all morning for the trim, have a 2hr lunch with mom, then 1/2 do the solar. I'm betting by 3 he'll be gone and oh yeah...won't be back until 'sometime' next week. New wrinkle...paying for full strip BUT 'they' decided they'll cover the north side shingles with the new ones. Yup the 'pro' is here again..... Thanks for the vent which reminds me , we specked new, HIGH flow vents to replace the 5 lowprofile ones..hmm..the ones he got are the SAME as the 20yr old ones on the roof... Maybe it's a good thing I'm fighting cityhall about the liquid tar runoff that's in my 1/4 acre garden from the 'grind/chi/tar' they did to the road... Jay |

Darn you just can’t win for losing. And Mama won’t admit that her pride and joy is no contractor but a sorry pos. Bet he doesn’t get any repeat business from anyone else he has done work for.

Jay, all I can say is you have more patience and tolerance than I !
“Scooter” would only be welcome to eat with his mom and leave at my house, I’m sure it’s a challenge to bite your tongue!, but If momma ain’t happy, nobody is gonna be happy. Entertain yourself with the city and it will blow on by! If it would make you feel better, I’d gladly send my future “son-in-bum” to help out! We all have them! |

dang man...welcome to my world! don't give the "stockholders" his name, or they'll prolly hire him! they hired one just about as bad for this roof. they over ordered, then took the excess home with them, we are still finding nails in the yard and driveway. the dumpster trailer was next to the house.

The good news is you get to spend some quality time with your stepson. The bad news is you will probably end up with him moving in because if he works like that he won't be working long when word gets out. And the other bad news is every time you look at the roof you won't be happy. I feel your pain but working with family is tough.

I guess 'accidentally' squeezing him around the throat a little bit probably wouldn't help much would it. I feel the frustration you are going through. The throat hug I know myself would be my personal first inclination. Don't ask me how I know that. Patience is like a short on ramp onto a busy freeway, it only goes so far before you are riding the rumble strips and the shoulder. |

Hmm - here they do not allow a 2nd layer of shingles any more - all roofs need complete tear off and ice / water sheeting a minimum of 36" up from measurement from outside wall . So if you have 24" or 12" overhang 2 - 36" rows are needed to meet code
Venting option is preferred to be ridge venting and or venting of unheated spaces in finished attics . Seems when he needs to remove new shingles to tear off old shingles underneath them when city inspector tags the job - might be ticked at whoever turned him in . |

update: well it's been 37 dayze since the 1 day roof job began... other neighbour had prety brown barnmaster roofing installed, took 4 hrs that included all the soffit/facia/etc. wife said she liked it, wondered why 'we' didn't go with metal( out house is BTW). I bit my tonque knowing the 'contractor' had TOLD his mama that 50yr shingles would be better. today I notice the GREAT patio door, he installed of course, has BOTH panes leaking( mist inside...),which reminded me the kitchen windw , he broke, 2 years ago ,actually leaks far worse... also had to acquire and store some skids so I can lift the shingle up to the roof for him... sigh.. I've bet myself that Shamless will test his machine before the 1 day roofing job is complete.. Jay

Looks like tadams might not ever have wine again, unless he's got a barnful already.

update: day 50, yes FIFTY..... dang, the 'flood' was shorter. no progress to report except that I cleaned the crap away from the 1/2 skid of shingles so clear view from deck and kitchen windows. Hopefully I'll remember it's there when Shamless 'donates' . Skids aren't friendly to snowblowers ! Jay
