Some of Ya'll may remember how I come to get this new Pro Mig 140 some months ago and lately it has been givin me absolute FITS,,,!!! Wasn't weldin for chit and doin more spittin gorillas that any weldin,,, When I got it thet thing would weld sooooo smooth with that distinctive "fryin Eggs" sound and put a beautiful flowin weld on just about anything I threw at it. Here lately,,tho,,I was bout to chit can it and thinkin bout buyin a TIG machine instead. I have an older 200 amp arc machine that will weld the pants off anything, and use it for really heavy stuff
Talkin to a welder friend last week and he says I should get an AC/DC maching and forget bout a Tig,,,???
Anyways,,back to the Pro Mig 140,I got to thinkin maybe the power cord might be some marginal so I installed a 15' piece of  #8 cord I had left over and gave it a try and SAME CHIT,,,,,then,,,,then,,,I notice the wire speed knob was settin on 5 which is  half of the dial so I set it on 2 like book had advised and,,,and,,,thet sob took off like a freakin  rocket,,,it went to fryin eggs like nobodies business,,,who'd a thought,,,?? Jeeeze,,I feel so ,,,,,NO,,,I FEEL GOOD,,,!!!Clap

Don't be afraid to play around with the settings, I have a Miller 210 and if you use the reference guide you won't be anywhere close to frying eggs. I have to cut the speed in half and step up the heat one setting to weld.

I caught my Millermatic Vintage for a long time. I put in a new liner and that really helped. I now have to turn the heat up one or two notches More than I used to. I think it may need a new capacitor or more than one. It’s quite agrivating.

I've had a Lincoln AC225 for 25+ years, replaced the amp switch this summer. Tried a fluxcore MIG, didn't like it, As long as I use quality 7018AC rods I can weld anything from rider decks to heavy plate steel. If I need any preceson or odd welding, my neighbour does that for me.

a DC machine will produce a 'better' weld or is supposed to. I have the diodes and choke to pervert my AC into a DC,never got around to it. DC can be easier to weld in 'all positions'. I have a 90% box of 6013 here, yuck... went back to 7018AC MUCH smoother, easier to use. Has to say 'AC' on the end, it's designed for AC welders !!
Honestly buy a brand name package of it, try it, you'll never go back to 6013.
I uses 3/32 7018AC at 40A for rider decks, 1/8" 7018AC for bigger stuff.

Got a Hobart wire feed that I use for light stuff and I have to play with the settings to get it where I want it. For real welding I use the Lincoln 225 AC that I have at the farm. It has served me well for years. A lot of people say the wire feed is easier to use but I prefer the old buzz box.

If I had to give up every tool I own but one that one would be my Millermatic. I have several welders but like that miller best. I also have my dads old Lincoln 225. It’s hard to beat a good Ac machine. I used to work for a guy with a 60’s sa200. It made awesome welds.

When I weld with 6013, the welds look like crap, but hold strong.

When I weld with 7018, the weld looks like a roll of nickels beautifully laid over right out of the sleeve.....and don't hold for chit!

I'm a pretty terrible welder....what am I doing wrong?

OK,,I gather the DC machines give you better control on overhead welding,,? I cannot weld for chit in the overhead position, and some vertical welds too. I'd rather take a** chewin than do an overhead weld.
Hey Jay,,I have very good results using 6013 Hobart rods that I get at Ms Big Ones on my old arc machine. They look to have been made specifically for this cracker box. I can make the prettiest welds with good penetration with these rods. I have never tried 7018 as I always thought it was for DC machines,,,??

Welding is preparation! And knowing the metal you are welding. After saying that I can tell you I have made welds that look like chicken chit! I have a Hobart wire welder that I have to tinker with to make good welds. Most of the time I just fire up the Lincoln ACDC 225 and get it done! After all that is what I have welded most with. My Hobart did not weld good with flux core wire. I have co2 argon gas with it now and it welds better. Seems like it is temperamental in it's settings with a lot of adjustments. I have to remember that wire welders are production machines!

I have welded with 7018 and what I found there is 2 types AC and DC rod. 7018 always welded good for me and held on most carbon steel. When welding metal that flexes or that is dissimilar I use stainless.

7018AC ! gotta be AC on the end....
one of those 'read the instructions' deals....
'AC' designated rods  must have some better coating of flux as regular 7018 don't work on an AC welder....
problem is some stores don't carry 7018AC....

easy enough to remember though AC.. Allis Chalmers !

Could be the AC issue. It’s an old box that was given to us long ago, not sure if the box is legible anymore or even if it’s the right box. I’ll check it out.

7018 doesn’t age well especially in a humid environment. Some welders will work well with 7018 ac and some not. I only like 7018 dc with a good dc welder. My ac225 Lincoln will produce decent welds with Ac 7018 my aead 200 ac will not.
I use a lot of 6011 on junk dirty metal and vertical.

Best little welder I had was an AEAD Miller. That had a ripping roar at the rod end when welding and really penetrated where other welders just sputtered along.
When using rod, I like having an old file laying along side to swipe the rod across to get rid of any build-up on the tip and then it starts welding easier.

Wirefeed welders where you use the flux core wire takes the opposite polarity than the solid core wire with gas does.

Hmmm.....pretty sure my "7018" is brown in color.....maybe it ain't 7018?  Pretty sure that's right though.  Yeah, the storage environment, or lack thereof, of our rod leaves a lot, er, everything, to be desired.  And it was old when it was given to us 25 years ago.  Still looks like a roll of nickels, but no penetration.

Did I mention I ain't much of a welder?EmbarrassedLOL  I'm self taught....using the term loosely.  Dad "welds" too.  He's much better at it than me I'd say....but he isn't much for being able to pass along any knowledge on the subject.  Need more frequent practice.

Tbone, At least your man enuff to admit your not much of a welder, ... but then again, you might be a better welder than you think or say that you are...
And I am sure you are far better than the maintanance man I had worked with for a spell... he thought he was a welder and I had to redo much of what he touched. burned holes through, or leaving chicken splatter welds that  had no penetration. and he never got any better than that, Not even with a wire feed, he had welds that looked like porcupine quills hanging out from all the starts and stops with the wire...  Had to wear gloves around his work.

Dad bought a Wards welder back in the late 50s,  it was a Lincoln,  with Wards name.   I got it in the 70s after dad died and I used it quite a bit with decent results  I am not a welder by trade,  and I use the term welder with tongue in cheek.  In the late 80s I decided to buy a new Miller AC/DC cause I heard you could weld in all positions.  Don`t know why,  but I could not weld with that welder,  I had it for 6-7 years and finally went down and got another cheap Lincoln.  I`m happy,  but hardly ever do any welding any more.  Welding takes lots of practice to be any close to being good.

if your using 7018 on an AC machine, your kidding yourself..  7018 is a LOW HYDROGEN, multi position rod. You can weld upside down, or uphill or flat... just need a GOOD DC welder.. Think of the difference between DC and AC.. AC " alternates back and forth".. DC is CONSTANT FLOW ONE DIRECTION........ the "LOW HYDROGEN" means the rod must be KEPT DRY.. You keep it in a small heater, old refrig, etc .. with a light bulb or element to keep the rod at least 50 degrees warmer than ambient... If its not hot, its WET and will not weld good... 25 year old rod is dumpster material. Most 7018 rod is GREY....... I normally run a 3/32 diameter rod for most things.. Heavy welding I will use 1/8 inch........ Farm stores like to push the 5/32.. that's WAY TOO BIG ..... and with 7018 the material has to be clean.. run a grinder over the face 1/2 inch in all directions to shinny metal........ 6011 and 6013 are the rods for AC machines and welding on old rust crap... and they don't have to be kept in an oven..

Joe, does your wire feed welder use a CO2 gas bottle for purge, or do you have shielded wire ( flue core)........ the gas purge REALLY makes a clean ripple finish.

A Lincoln AC225 BUZZ BOX is a basic stick welder...  A flux core wire feed is a basic MIG welder ........... once you use a DC stick welder with 7018 rod, or a Wire Feed with gas purge, you will never go back.. The difference is night and day..... but there is a COST.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Hey Steve,,,I have both,,,the first Pro 140 Mig was warranteed and they sent me a new Pro 140,,,the older machine, after repairs,,, I have it set up with flux core wire and this new one I have set up with solid wire and CO2 for purge. Now that I figured the wire speed issue,,it works many wonderfuls,, but it will not do for chit in a slight breeze,,it is strictly an inside machine for sureClap

Gas shielded MIGs make a welder out of ALMOST anybody!  Until  you're in the wind.

Maybe the time to throw that old rod away is now, when dad's on vacation!LOLWink  Nah....He'll notice, and that won't be a comfortable conversation, no need to put him through that.

If I know I'm going to weld, and if it's a nice day, I'll stick a bunch of rods in the ground nearby, spaced apart, so the sun shines on them and the air moves around them to dry them out, helps a lot, but not as good as keeping them warm to begin with I fully realize.  I like JC's idea of the file.

Like to get a MIG someday.....Like to try a DC someday....I don't know what model our Miller is, but I think it's a decent welder.  It's been around a while, probably late 60's?

Miller makes nice machines.. I bought a SMALL DC unit 20 years ago. It was called a THUNDERBOLT and is about 200 amps........ about the same physical size as the old LINCOLN AC 225 Buzz box..... DC really makes a  great welder out of a good welder.

Mig, Tig, AC, DC, spool guns + plasma cutters all setting in my shop and most of the time a 1/2 ton of cut metal waiting to be welded. Stop by any time, if you want to weld.
This was one of last weeks jobs.

Definitely recommend spending a little extra on a welder if you want to minimize headaches. Whether you do it a lot, or every now and then, the cheapo depos will just make you pull hair and end up taking your welding job somewhere else.
I run a Miller Bobcat 250 engine driven unit on the service truck. AC/DC/ CC/CV. Also has a 10kw generator. That one belongs to the company. I have a 225 Bobcat that needs a voltage regulator, but gets donated a spare boat battery and run from time to time. Have an old Miller SP38 "suitcase" wire feeder that runs off the Bobcat if I want to run any wire. About as fast to just get a 3/32" 7018 out rather than hook up and set the wire feeder. I usually run a 7018 1/8" rod or 5/32". Run all positions, since im usually welding structural steel for an overhead crane or runway.
If you are having problems with a 7018 penetrating and staying together, you must either have wrong polarity or not enough heat. I find that they weld well even when the steel isn't clean. Burned in through paint before with no problems. If the weld looks good, then there has to be something else going on. A 7018 that isn't hot enough usually just leaves a big series of lumps and boogers.
I would look at Lincoln or Miller for a good machine. I have been told that Everlast makes good, lower priced welders, but never ran one. Personal experiences only, I DO NOT  like ESAB machines. Don't seem to be good quality. Have heard some good things about the Vulcan welders that Harbor Freight is selling now too, but haven't spoken to anyone at length about them. Supposedly, the guy who started the company used to work for Lincoln or Miller. May not be true.
Rule of thumb with Mig. If the wire is stabbing into the metal you are welding, feed speed is too fast for heat setting. If the wire is burning back toward the gun and "dripping" onto the steel, feed speed is too low for the heat seting. Go up or down with either, preferably on a piece of scrap, til you get the wire to burn right into the puddle, and you see that weld is penetrating the base metal without burning through it. That should give you the egg frying sound, but with really thin stuff, you may have to short stitch, which means start and stop. You will see the puddle turn bright yellow just before it burns through. Know this well. Ive burned A LOT of holes through metal.CensoredBig smile
I didn't do it! It was a short, fat, tall, skinny guy that looked like me!
