Removed the sprocket axle from my right side. seal was bad. outer bearing looks to have a little wear so I will replace it. Case looks good. inner bearing looks good but probably will replace it. The bad is theres pretty good groves wore into the axle where the seal rubs. having never seen an axle I would suspect it should be smooth. looks as though I need another axle so if any of you on here has one just email me. Also is there way I can have it machined down and maybe sleeve put on it. I don't know what size the shaft where the seal rubs is suppose to be. just trying to see what options I have. all help appreciated. thank

Ok Norm - per the description in the post - " pretty good grooves" does this mean that the axle has been compromised to a point that its tensile strength is in question?

Is the axle worn to a point where it could be fracture critical if the design load against it would cause it to fail?

While speedy sleeve have their place, am wondering if grooves are such that a new or good used would be an option to consider for the subject repair?

Good Luck...

I took it to the local fab shop and they said they could turn it down and sleeve it. cost 120 bucks. I think I am going to have it done on this one. I am concerned about integrity of it also. In the mean time the fellow from zimmermans called and said they had some. I went down to look and I found one from a 655 that s in pretty nice shape so I bought it after we haggled on the starting price of 375 and e came down considerably but he had 6/7 axles. I don't think there are to many dummys besides me wanting parts for an hd4. prices were stupid. allis wanted 1500 for a new one, others wanted 6-8 hundred for a used one. did find a new after market for 600. im liven, learning and going broke . o well theres another day. thanks to you all. now I have to find a seal. allis wants 135 for theres. May just have to put some rope in there and say the heck with it. Have a good day to all.
