 Topic: WD Transmission noise

I have a 1951 WD and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to fix the wining noise in the transmission. I've talked to several people and they said they think all of the WDs had it. Didn't know if there was a special oil or any trick to make the noise more quiet or even gone. Everyone I've talked to locally said it's not a big deal and wouldn't hurt a thing. Any thoughts are appreciated!

They were all like that until sometime in 1952 when they switched to helical cut gears in the transmission. That removed the whine that the previous transmissions were known for.

And that is the difference between the 2 transmissions right there in a nutshell. Your 52 is most likely fine-just the nature of the beast. Does your 52 have a straight shift lever or is it a curved shifter like the WD45s had??

Oh ok, that's what I figured, and it is a straight shaft. Has anyone tried replacing the old gears with the newer style helical ones?

Probably be cheaper to find a WD45 in a scrap yard and take that transmission.

On my 51 2nd gear is the noisiest I think from the heaviest use. many years ago I had a JD B that had a broken tooth on one of the gears, after replacing it with a used one it always was noisy due to different wear patterns. Lesson I got from that was if you change one gear you should change the matching one also. I wouldn't mess with your transmission unless you have s0me bad bearings. If you can't sleep at night over this I would remove the rear cover and look at the ring and pinion to see how they are. At the same time you can use a pry bar to see if pinion shaft bearings are bad.

2nd gear raised cain in those from new it seems just comes with the tractor.Personally I prefer the older transmission over the newer one the way its geared and you'll almost never find one that jumps out of gear.Couple tubes of Corn head grease will quiet it some.

There are different degrees of "noise". Give me a break. You're asking about a transmission that is 70 years old and could have bearings that are badly worn. There is a chance that it has been run low on oil and lightly seized the pinion bearings and got refilled with oil and now is more NOISEY than it was before. They were kind of known for a second gear whine when plowing....second gear was used a lot on those tractors. You cannot swap internals from the old transmission to the newer helical gear transmission....the rear end case is different.

Ok, no, I'm sleeping just fine ha ha, I was just wondering what everyone else was experiencing. There's a lot too learn about my wd. I'll look at those gears and bearings and might also try that corn head grease. Thanks for the advice!

Just read that last post from Dr. Allis. This tractor did have some leaks so that is very possible, it whines in 1st, 2nd and 3rd but 4th gear is quiet.

So,......I guess if your tractor whines in 4th, it might be the rear end or more likely, the final drive gears.

If you want to experience noise just drive an old Oliver Been there, done that. We had 2 770s. Noisy as all getout and they say our ACs are slow too. Take all day to get anywhere with those 770s and have to listen to that noise until you got there too. Geesh.

I wouldn't try mixing in corn head grease into the rear end. Unless packed full, it deons't fill in and lubricate all the nooks and crannies like oil does. Especially until the grease gets warm.

We had a WD we bought cheap because 2nd gear raised cain and the MF dealer couldn't sell it about 1966.Put in 3 tubes of regular grease along with the oil already in the rear used it to mow hay for the next 20 years and sold it about 2000.The grease might eventually cause a problem but hasn't so far as I know where the tractor is today and a guy still uses it.It did help quiet 2nd down some BTW.
