I have a neighbor up the road named Shawn . His dad was one of my best friends. Shawn is slow and some years ago married a girl that’s slow. Keep in mind these folks are mid 40’s. Shawn’s dad died about 5 years back. On his death bed I promised to keep an eye on Shawn. After his dads passing Shawn’s mother signed papers to help Shawn and his wife adopt 2 drug babies that both had very serious behavioral problems. Last month the youngest was kicked out of school at 8 years old. Every day Shawn falls asleep and little Nathanial runs away and breaks stuff and steals from all the neighbors. A couple weeks back he stole his dads shot gun and some shells. He was shooting cars going down the hwy. I have pics if anyone wants to see. The police caught him at the end of our driveway. They gave the shotgun back and told Nathanial not to shoot anyone else and sent them home.
DHS or the police won’t do a thing. A guy who’s truck got shot and his wife nearly killed can’t get any help getting his truck fixed. The police or DHS don’t return his calls. I’m thinking about having a benefit for him and advertise in every paper and radio station. |

Your benefit idea is a great one. Good luck and hope it turns out as well as you hope.
Sounds like a messed up situation!

X2. And get the local tv stations involved. Hopefully you will raise enough to fix the guy's truck and more. The more people that know about Shawn's situation means more pressure put on local law enforcement and family & children's services to get something done. The local law should have confiscated the shotgun as "evidence" until a judge could rule on the competency of Shawn to have weapons in the house. If they don't do something we will be seeing news reports on tv about Nathanial going on a killing spree and the liberals wanting to ban shotguns because they are bad and kill people. Or a neighbor will have to kill Nathanial to protect himself and his family. This is a terrible situation and one that has no easy solution.

You may want to offer Shawn that you can store his guns for a period of time to be on the safe side.

I did and guess what??? Brace your self for this but Shawn told me he locked the guns in a cabinet and then put a padlock on the door to the room and then showed Nathanial where the keys were and told him to never again get a gun out without permission. |

So heart breaking to have to watch things like this go on. I don't wish this on anyone. The world needs a "bad guy" to take the responsibility and provide the tough love the kid needs. Cause without it as Hurbert said we will all see it another sad story on TV.

Thad, brace yourself but it sounds to me like Shawn is trying to enable Nathanial to get to the guns again. Probably locked in a kitchen wall type cabinet in a utility room. Easy to get into it, then tell him where the door lock key is. Just maybe Shawn's trying to get rid of this kid and keep his appearance good with everyone else who might not want to get rid of him. Having you store the guns would have made it way difficult for Nathanial, and only slightly inconvenient for Shawn. Anything happens, he can say "I locked up the guns." But i'm probably all wet and watch too much tv. Just food for thought. |

A couple years back Shawn asked me to come help him mow some stuff. When I got there the oldest boy had a little dog tied up and stabbing him with a stick. I told Shawn to make him stop. Shan told him no in a manner of absolutely no authority. The kid kept at it.. I snatched the stick and tilt Shawn and the boy that if I ever got word of the boy stabbing or doing anything to a dog I’d have the dog and the state would have the kids. I didn’t have to deal with them for a couple years after that. Another neighbor came over the night of the shooting and said he found a dodge key and lighter on his property. I knew the kid had stolen his moms car key. I saw Shawn drive down our road so I flagged him down and asked if it was his. I asked if they were looking for the kid and Shawn told me that they were just out for a drive. Minutes later I heard the shooting from my property across the road. I told Jenn I was gonna go see what was going on.she went with me. We saw Nathan in the ditch and I was going after him but Jenn said let’s go get Shawn. By then the cars had been shot and police on the way. Shawn lied to me and Jenn or I could have easily been shot.
Jenn said the guy finally got a call back but can’t get any money because of an investigation. Everyone else involved is told they can’t do anything because the kid was 8 |

What a terrible state of affairs! It's only a blind luck chance that the weapon of easiest opportunity was the gun and ammunition that it was, or we would be talking about dead people from a shooting. Only a matter of time.

Because he's 8 years old is no excuse. The authorities are either lazy and dropped the ball, or they are telling people this while they gear up to blind side him into custody. Hopefully it is the latter, and soon before anyone is hurt or killed. Hopefully Nathanial can get the proper help he definitely needs.

Reading the dog story reminds me of a couple of my cousins. They're brothers and are probably 20 years older than me. Mama told me they were known for torturing cats when they were little. Torture meaning lighting them on fire. One of them got out of prison a few years before he died so I met him but the other I've never met and never will because he'll be in there until death. He's been out several times over the years but usually went back within 48 hours. The last time the judge said "I've had enough of this make sure you hug your mama" and sent him away for good. I believe if I were you Thad I'd be quick to call the law on anything neighbors feelings be damned. Any hesitation could result in somebody hurt or killed. There's a time to be a neighbor and a time to worry about yourself.

Thad, you need to get the guns out of the house NOW. RIGHT NOW. If you don't, we will be seeing this on the morning news shows. We had a deal just about like it in Algona some years back. If some one is not in their right mind, they don't need a gun to add to the trouble.

Thad, hope it stays quiet. You don't need any of that kind of excitement. Maybe with a new Sheriff in town he can get some action and maybe get DFACS to step in.

Well, in my humble opinion, those kids should never have been placed in that home. Obviously Shawn and his wife were not equipped to handle such a job. Kids from broken homes, especially junkies for parents will need a level of upbringing that is above and beyond the level of normal. The state/county, whoever should certainly known better! All my uneducated humble opinion.
But, all that being said, it doesn't help now. I hate to say it, but this is not going to end well. Those kids need professional help, and they are not going to get it where they are at. Best would be a full time, live in professional 'parenting coach' to help with the raising, but that will never happen due to cost. next best thing remove them and institutionalize them, for the sake of the community, the kids, and Shawn and his wife torturing animals is a very bad sign! That poor couple is in waaaay over their head. Edited by LouSWPA - 30 May 2018 at 12:20pm |

The guy from KS who got shot at called last night to say the police left him a voice mail saying that they dropped the case and if he wants his truck fixed to call a lawyer. So much for this new Sheriff.

Actually Thad, I'm not a lawyer, so I could be wrong, but I think that is how it works. Law Enforcement only handles the criminal aspect of it. Civil court is where one citizen get relief from another citizen. However, it seems to me, in my uneducated opinion there was criminal activity there, although, the rules may vary some with a juvenile. and, a civil case is often easier to win if there was criminal charges against the party one is suing. But, again, I am not a legal expert...…..never even played one in the movies!

two questions...
How did SHAWN get a gun to start with ? How has the kid NOT been taken by DFS ? those type kids have no business being in a house with adults that are not quite right.

File a claim with the insurance company. Even if there is no collision coverage, comprehensive should pay. Let the insurance company sue Shawn.
And if ever there was a case where guns need to be removed, this is it. Edited by TramwayGuy - 01 Jun 2018 at 10:26pm |

These guns were Shawns Dads Guns. Im a little surprised that Shawns mother let that happen. I removed a ball from a muzzle loader that was Shawns Dads and he died in the process. Shawns mother asked me not to give it to shawn because she didnt want him having a working gun. Shawns mother did sign to help them get those boys. She remarried and moved away soon after they got the boys. Lots of folks around here were not happy about that. They did sell their other house and move back here. Her new husband is a very good man but I've tried to talk to him about this and he says his hands are tied and he stays out of it.
Some folks recenty opened a new restaurant out here. Lots of motorcyclists frequent the place. The boys went up on the hwy and placed big rocks across the hwy. Just like this mess, they swept it under the rug. Keep in mind were on the west side of the county and the PD is on the east.

Every time DHS comes out they sneak out the back door and miss their apointments. They then go to Shawns mothers house and they don't answer the door so they call my wife and ask her what they should do.

All tax payers in county have problem.
Kind of like a problem here: A 42 year old crazy off his meds had to locked up for every ones safty. Beat his head on the wall,so jail tied him down. Mental Heath did not come pick him up. Died of blood clot in leg. Parent get 5 mil from County insurance because mental heath department did not do its job. Not the same but the same in tax payers end up paying when nothing is done. Wish I had other advice for you Thad.

Thad has the DHS, DFS, or Sheriff gotten any further results in controlling Nathanial, or is he still terrorizing your neighborhood?

All the neighbors are on red alert. I only know of one time he’s went missing. A neighbor saw them looking for him and soon everyone knew he was missing. Sheriff and DHS got numerous calls. They ain’t letting him out of their sight. I believe Shawn’s mom may have taken over. I saw her on the road a couple days ago. She wouldn’t wave or speak. I’m very sad over this. I’ve known and been friends with her since I was very young.
