The other day I removed the manifold off the D10 to drill and tap the bolt holes that hold the muffler on. Three of the nuts were so rusty they wouldn't come off. The stud came out of the head instead. Two of the holes were the studs were coolant ran out. After removing the manifold, I screwed the studs back in with my fingers and it seemed to stop the coolant, so I figured once everything was back in tight there wouldn't be a problem. I put the manifold back on today and I've coolant seeping out around these two studs. My first question, is this normal, or is my head damaged? I wouldn't have thought those holes went into the water cavity. Second, I need some type of thread sealant to stop the seeping. Is there something I can use that would handle the heat?

I think it's normal that these go into the water jackets. I put #2 permatex as sealer on mine, but there might be something better.

even thread tape,but you have to tighten them good in the hole.My 45 goes into water also...

its normal, prolly will stop, once the rust starts workin, again... If it bothers you, just dip the studs in blue goo, loctite, shellac, thread tape, whatever is handy. If I were putting new studs in, I'd go with locktite, but that's up to you...

Thanks everyone, I'm glad to hear it's normal. It's probably something a grown man should have already known, but I didn't. I did use some thread tape because that's all I had handy. I knew it would melt, but I thought it might not matter as long as it gummed up the threads. I ran the tractor about an hour afterwards and it seemed to work. I do plan to get new studs later and I will get something better.

For holes which are open to the water jacket, I use Permatex #2 Form A Gasket non hardening pliable sealant.

If you want to remove the nuts, heat them cherry red and then throw cold water on them. This separates the metals. Work great when I did it in my D14. I did overheat a couple too much, but I was planning on using new nuts anyway.
