Picked up a rake today. Does anyone know if there is a model number? This one has 3 setting gearbox and a shifter. Also does anyone know what happens to gearbox when it does go bad?

I could be wrong, but I don't think that they have a model number. They are just referred to as "the PTO rake". The gear box actually has a high speed and low speed for normal raking, and then a gear that reverses the basket for what they call "tedding", which is basically fluffing up a windrow with minimal movement. On mine, the gearbox was stuck in one gear when I got it, but after some use, it'll now easily shift between all three gears. When you ask about what happens to a gearbox when it goes bad; well I guess stuff just doesn't work. Typical "gearbox gone bad" symptoms. I really like my PTO rake. Darrel

I received an owners manual with mine. There it is referred to as the "side delivery rake". Works great! Love 1st gear, 2nd gear and tedding gear. I change the transmission fluid every year whether it needs it or not and it has stayed in A-1 shape. I'd say if you do that you are on your way to a problem free transmission. Enjoy!

Appreciate the help. Have done some searching and wasn't sure if it was a #7 or not. Pretty stoked, as this is my first Allis rake. Seems to be in pretty good operating shape, with the exception of a couple broken teeth. Cant wait to get her out in the field this summer behind the B

The Allis Chalmers “ PTO Rake/Tedder” with the hi-lo-reverse gear box was the predecessor to the #7 PTO rake. The early rake has the castor wheel at the right front of the basket, whereas the #7 has it behind the basket. The problem that arises with the gearbox is when the chain gets too loose, hasn’t been kept properly oiled or the tensioners arn’t doing their job properly, then the output housing will break away from the main housing. I have lots of NOS and used parts for these rakes, including teeth and the two holders for them.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

We sold a few of these "side delivery rakes - PTO". They worked fine. However, the gear boxes sometimes broke from misuse as described above. We could get the parts then and rebuilt them. Perhaps there are some parts out there.
Be sure to change the oil and keep the chain well adjusted. Good Luck! Bill Long |
