You guys on this site always have the best info so here it goes. I have some older tractors in my fleet that have always used 30w oil for years but all my new tractors and skidsteers use 15w40, Dad always said never use multi grade in the old girls. What do you guys think ?? Thanks

the BEST thing you can do for the older tractors is use multi viscosity oils... THe thnner 10 weight end makes them roll over good in the winter and startup faster.. The 30wt on the top end is to keep the oil thicker as it warms up.. Most use 10w 30, but if you want to standardize on 15w 40 like the skid steer, I see nothing wrong with that............ If your old 30 wt was a NON detergent, then you might get some cleaning of the gunk in the motor with the new oil. Monitor the new oil and it if turns BLACK early, then change it out sooner ( once or twice).. some have complained about this, personally I have never had that problem.

We use John Deere 15w40 in our farm equipment. Works great.

I think the lone exception might be the old Two-Stroke Detroit Diesels. Straight weight type was the only specified oil, at least the last I heard.
Lubricant Recommendation for Detroit DieselĀ® Two-Cycle Engines SAE Viscosity Grade 40 API Classification: CD-II, (Note: CD-II is an obsolete designation replaced by the current API Rating CF-2) Military Spec: MIL-L-2104D Sulfated Ash: Less than 1.0% |
