Ok, this is an odd request. My wife an I are watching the movie "A Christmas Story", we love it and do it every year. We was wondering what kind of tractor was pulling the float Santa Clause was riding in the parade. I think it was a M Farmall. It could be an H. Can anyone tell for sure? If you are going to watch the movie, take notice and let me know. The time period for the movie was supposed to be 1939 or 40. When was the H and M first built? I was thinking not until the 50s, but I could be wrong. Thanks Ranse.

The whole movie is great, lots of funny scenes. That kid reminds me so much of myself at that age, except I never had enough nerve to jump on a bully.

My wife and I visited the Christmas Story house in Cleveland this last summer where part of the movie was filmed. If you are a fan of the movie (like me) it was worth the stop.

I grew up in Cleveland, moved away in the 70's. Higbee's was a high-end department store- at Christmas, they set up the Twigbee Shop, where a kid could go through a special door that was about 3 feet high with a dollar bill in his hand, and come out with a wrapped present for mom and dad. Greatest promotion ever. But they had Santa set up like shown in the movie, only he didn't kick them down the slide!

Definitely Farmall M's. There is a quick shot of a Farmall A pulling a float. Although time period correct for the movie, the paint and decals suggest these are later tractors.
Not complaining a bit. It is still the best Christmas movie ever made.

Filmed in Cleveland, but based upon Jean Shepherd's childhood in Hammond, Indiana. They mildly fictionalize by referring to "Hohman, Indiana" in the movie, but Hammond's original name was "Hohman" and Hohman Ave. is main street in downtown Hammond. In fact, my office in on Hohman Ave. "A Christmas Story" is a huge deal in Hammond.

I do love the movie, but I have to say they did seem to have a lot for 1939. A car, electricity, running water, a bathroom, gas cook stove, and a refrigerator. I know all that stuff existed then, but according to my parents it wasn't very common. I know my mother used to fuss about all the stuff the Waltons had when we used to watch that. She said, "we never had any of that stuff back then".

'39, maybe '40.. I base this on the prominence iof "The Wizard of Oz" as that came out in '39 and would have been a big deal in '39.
Hammond, IN was doing quite well there just prior to WWII. The steel industry was booming and the support industries around that were doing well also. Places like this recovered from the depression first. It is just outside Chicago and Chicago was growing its way out of the depression a couple of years before this. The steel to build all those art deco skyscrapers came from Northwest Indiana.
In any event, a great movie.
