Good day to everyone out there in Allis Chalmers land. I've always enjoyed reading and learning from this page. Haven't posted much but visit all the time.
I'm having an issue with my 220 on the electronics and charging. Multiple tests say the alternator is working but the tractor will never start because the battery is always dead. Have tried new battery and after a days work, it is shot. Getting tired of jumping it every time i have work to do and i am obviously not a whiz-kid when it comes to electronics. Everything else works and runs great!! My question is where might i find the gremlin in this deal? I am to the point of finding an all new alternator, wiring, regulator and battery. Im just not the electronic whiz to do it myself. Thanks for any and all suggestions. Edited by tom71 - 08 Oct 2017 at 9:23pm |

More information needed to help make a determination. #A. are you checking alternator on the tractor or taking it to someone with a test bench? if done on a test bench it may be the voltage regulator at fault, it's under the cover in front of dash. #B. When operating the tractor does the ammeter on dash register; charge+ / 0 / discharge? #C. What if any accessories are on when operating? ie., lights, AC, radios, etc.

Do you have a repair manual? When you touch the negative or positive cable to the battery does it spark with everything turned off? If so something is drawing power. You can pull fuses until it doesn't spark and that will narrow it down but you really need a test light and a manual. Good luck.

Warning from some one who knows the hard way. Unhook your battery while checking your wiring. I did not , a skinned hot wire touched metal and I had a serious wiring fire in the blink of an eye. It was before the fuse so it didn’t blow the fuse. It took over 4 hours to replace 4 wires that got damaged. I had to take a lot of factory tape off which is a pain because it melted into the harness. I was chasing a blown fuse issue when I turned the light switch to hi beam. Turned out to be grounding inside the fender after 49 years of rubbing I guess.
My gauge wasn’t registering a charge but it wasn’t draining my battery. It ultimately was due to my fresh paint job not allowing the gauge to get a ground thru the console face. Removed some paint around the opening solved it. I would also recommend having your alternator professionally tested before searching for a wiring problem. |

Four tests ago, alternator tested off tractor at reliable location. Rest have been while on tractor.
Guage shows a discharge immediately upon turning on the key! No accessories running. No ac at all. Lights not used. Edited by tom71 - 08 Oct 2017 at 9:18pm |

Well after three good days over the last 12, and no issues we are back to a drain on the battery. So frustrating. . .
