I acquired a Genset powered by a 11000 MKII engine 516 cu.in. (690 hr) Have somebody that is thinking about making a pulling engine out of it. I have seen a D-21 puller with a 516. Has anyone here used one? To me they seem like a bit of a boat anchor.

Most places won't let you use the 516 because it wasn't a factory engine or a replacement engine in a tractor.

Calvin, they use them in Ohio in the Classic Super Stock class down there. It is in their rules that that engine is allowed for AC. Gets them closer to the 531ci limit that they have. They work very good. Cheers.

I'm told that the flywheel from a 426 will fit the 516. Don't know for sure, but that's what I've been told. You'll surely gain 300 to 400 lbs of weight switching, won't you ??

Well, I got my own curiosity up.....1425 lbs for a basic 426 and 2300 lbs for the 516 !!!! 875 lbs difference according to my spec books.

yup flywheel uses same rear main seal and wear ring,,, as the 426 - flywheel a tad larger.. |

Dinosaur of a motor really, if youre going to pull, step up to a detroit block, or a Sisu, both far better then the 516
|

Do you know what they get the head to flow? Maybe Allis got lucky in the port layout, or there is plenty of cast in the critical areas. From pictures ive seen the ports look big enough.

Gary puts on the older heads from the non turbo engines and then does a lot of porting. Said the flow was ALOT better after this.

The detroit is better, crank is superior, roller lifter block, accepts IH heads, will make 600 + ci easy, easy to find parts for, and most important, it's an actual recognized upgrade motor, no worries about getting kicked out after dumping all the money into it!

The reason it is used in Ohio is because the rules, I believe, require the block to be AC, or original manufacturer. I'd have to read the rules again to be sure.
