Is there any thing a guy can do to at least have a good idea if a 190 trans is ok. The last 190xt we picked up comes out of 4/8th instantly. There is a 190 gas for sale locally that has had the torque tube removed and a junker put in its place, the engine will run but the tube is empty so no movement. The current owner of the gasser has never seen it move so he doesn't know? I think I could get it at just above scrap since there are some parts missing.

There are 3 ways to do job GOOD, FAST, CHEAP. YOU MAY CHOOSE 2. If its FAST & CHEAP it won't be GOOD, if it's GOOD & CHEAP it won't be FAST, and if its GOOD & FAST it won't be CHEAP!!!!

I'm thinking since it it a straight 190 and gas that there is a chance the trans is ok?

if you pull the top plate can't you see the teeth the collar slides onto when it's in the other gear?If so you may get an idea how things are but the collar is what you need to see.Don't know if you can see the edges of it or not....

If it is a straight One-Ninety prior to s/n 9000, there are only USED parts available for the transmission.

Thanks for the info doctor. Just out of curiosity what is different about them and if it would turn out to be a good transmission could it be used behind the 190 XT diesel? Or is it just a lighter duty assembly from the lower horsepower tractors?

Think what you want, it makes no difference as the problems are caused by operator error - grinding gears. Doesn't matter if it is a 190 or XT, gas, diesel or LP. There is no way to check the transmission on a non running tractor until you remove it and take it apart. Even though you can get it cheap, it's still a gamble. I would rebuild your tranny instead. Yes, it is expensive, but you will know that it will be trouble free for the rest of your life (if treated right). |

I'm sure your right but it's probably just me trying to rationalize picking up another one. Truth be told I'd probably end up fixing both of them if I get it. I'd like to move our loader to a gasser for the winter.
