What was the application for a single front wheel tractor? Why sfw as opposed to a narrow front with two wheels?

DAD'S ANSWER; HE HAD A 7 FOOT FINISH MOWER AND 2- WD45'S: 1- SFW AND 1-DUAL. THE SFW TURNED MUCH SHARPER IN THE GRASS WITHOUT TEARING UP THE LAWN WHERE THE DUEL FRONT WHEEL WOULD TEAR UP THE LAWN.

We had a SFW WD like Don's. It steered so easy in the field compared to the other configurations. Of course that's when the front wheel was actually on the ground. I never thought the light front end was a bad thing. It was something I got used to and used it to make easier work. Hervey

Back when navy beans were raised around here, some farmers would put a single front wheel on the tractor they put the bean puller on.

They were used with mounted cornpickers so they would go thru mud better. Out here they were used for the narrow row vegetable growing operations.

We need some more pictures of Ginger the SWF! I did not even know they made these until joining the forum. Never saw one around here. I would assume row crop/ vegetable usage. Maybe cultivating like Don's WD45 has?

I can tell you from 1st hand experience that a SFW is about the worst thing in the mud you can imagine. They were called 'Cotton Wheels' in SE VA and Eastern NC seems the cotton growers liked them.

Putting a single front wheel on was part of mounting the 2ME picker on an M back in the days. Dad bought it because of mud. The original tire with it didn't help much, but Dad then put on a smaller front tire. That was a lot better than the original tricycle front set-up in mud.

Sometimes referred to as the "Cotton Special". Have a D-Series one and the first thing you learn is DO NOT try any disassembly of that wheel without releasing all air from the tire. The properly rated tire is also not cheap!
