I noticed when my mower belt was off my 616 when I would shut my engine off the clutch pull would continue to spin for a while. I could engage the clutch and stop it and when the deck is on it does not spin. Does this sound to you like I have a clutch bearing starting to go out?

My 616 did the same thing last summer when i had the deck off to replace belts. I'm interested in the answer to this as well.

My 720 does the same thing. Haven't used the mower yet. Someone told me it would be fine if deck was on. rrhead(SD)

yeah with the deck on it does not turn. i just figured i'd better check before something goes boom and is a lot more expensive.

My 620 does the same thing. It spins, but there is no wobble to it, so I think it should be fine.

OK there is a bearing inside that clutch to support the belt sheave so when mower belt in on the sheave will allow motor to turn without powering belt . When magnet is energised - it locks sheave to drive plate - taking the need for the bearing out of loop . Now the bearing has internal resistance to being at rest - FRICTION - of balls and grease within the bearing - normal and natural - now when belts are in place - that resistance overcomes the friction drag so pulley is stationary and does not spin with motor . With belts off y you should be able to turn sheave easily with little resistance and no rough feel or noise - checking the baring in this manner - bearing is replaceable also - wobble in sheave - bearing would have to be real bad - so look for other problem other than bearing - if a problem at all .
