All the A-C engines for Onan sets were painted blue... not a Big Al.

The Big Al is an interesting search- I've taken to peeking under the fenders of all the old trucks I see, just in case... It's like looking for the sasquatch.

Its an 844 ci with the innercooler at least and there getting a lil hard to find! If its a late model it could have the improvements to make it a good one, id luv to find out, but NY is a little far !

All of the engines (for Onan), what ever the series were painted a flat buff color. Kind of a greenish yellow.

So would an engine for a Gleaner combine, for example, leave the engine factory yellow and be painted black at the combine plant?

With the intercooler and turbo makes it a 25000 series engine, no intercooler but with a turbo makes it a 21000 series engine, no intercooler and no turbo makes it a 17000 series engine. They are all based on the "844" block.

When I was working at the Harvey engine plant (68-79) all of the combine engines where painted orange before being shipped from the Harvey engine plant.

Yes, the earlier ones were orange, later were black, must have changed after '79...
Metric designation must have happened around '78 or so? |

The color change must have happened after December 79. I left AC on December 17th of that year and up till then the combine engines where orange.
To the best of my memory the only metric designation that was used was the 12 liter engine that they had recently introduced at that time, also maybe the little 4cyl 433i (the old 2200 series).

I think they started calling the 11000 Mk2 the 685T about the time the 745C loader came out- must have been '78 or '79... 11000 was changed to 11000 mk2 around 1976 or so, I think. Just curious, nice to talk to somebody "who was there".
Merry Christmas |

17000 was a turbo`d engine, not NA. It was used in the series B HD16 powershift tractors. A buddy of mine ran a 16DP on special purpose land clearing jobs and had hot rodded his 844 to up near BIG AL power using parts from a number of different spec engines. He had used some from 17000`s, and said the gudgeons were bigger than those from 16000, 19000, and 21000 engines he had torn down
