If you where going to buy a new set of tires and have them top cut what would you buy?

Firestone still shows 14.9-38 in the TFR and 15.5 in the sat2.
Is there anything better? Thanks, JM

The issue is not so much tire size, its the hardness. New tires are soft. Older tires are hard. If you cut a soft tire and then pull it on a hard track , it will peal the edge off. Also  depends on the rules  what tire is allowed.

I spent the $$$$ 12 years ago and bought a pair of 14.9 x 38 F151 Firestones and had them professionally cut to 3/4" bar height and baked in a furnace. Ran them 1/2 of a season and took them off due to lugs rolling back under a tough pull. I left them sit outside for 9 years in the sun and wind. Ran them the last couple Summers and have just had them resharpened and re-cooked. We'll see. There is nothing like a 20 or 30 year old tire that's been in mud, manure and dirt and sun for rubber toughness. I have been very disappointed in my purchase of these new tires and yet know I can't even find 14.9 x 38's used anywhere.

Thanks for the advice, I kinda figured that would be the response. I will look for some old tires.

I wonder if you cut the lug down to 3/8 and heat cured if they would still roll back?

Probably not as bad but, the sharp edge doesn't stay sharp like an old tire. Like I say, I've been really disappointed with my purchase. If I'd never pulled on a hard track, it would have been better, but we're never in charge of what kind of dirt we get.

I have witnessed the tread tearing first hand. Its not fun. A good set of 18.4's were thrown away just because they were not hard enough and the tread tore
