Just installed a new guage in this 55 HD5. Motor will only heat up to about 140 tops while working the old girl and will quickly drop down to 120 at high idle. Not sure if my dad removed the thermostat years ago but I know the original guage has not worked for 40 years.
Can someone give me the correct thermostat part number and can I get it locally? I'd like to take it apart tomorrow but don't want to get into it if I cannot locate the correct parts.

Detroit Diesel part, should set to run about 170-180, even with a thermostat they would cool down at idle from vent or bypass flow.  Most suppliers will have listings for the 2 cyl 71 series DD, may have to go direct to a DD supplier online.

My HD6G's never get warm whenI work them. I have had the thermostats out of both of them. The thermostats do open when tested with hot water. The thermostats are different for the 2 HD6G's that I have running. The thermostats are not interchangable. The thermostat housings are also different. My parts book lists only one part number for the thermostat and one part number for the housing.

Question 1 Where can I get a thermostat?
Question 2 Am I damaging the engines when they don't come up to operating temperature?

I wonder if the 271's just run cold? I know the manual says the temp should be up past 160 or you will get deposits in your motor but I'd really like to hear from people that work them and have good guages. What do they normally run?
Maybe I'm wasting my time replacing the thermostat b/c as far as I know this is the way this dozer has run for at least 45 years...? I know since I was young my dad never had the temp guage working....?

mine runs from 140 to 160 most times and the gauge I now have in it shows a green scale just starting at 160 - so it always looks like it is running cold. Only been that way for last 30 years and has not hurt anything i can see.

I think I may have seen 136 on it but I had only been dozing lightly for 30 minutes. I don't push full throttle as I'm weeding out the weak links and don't want to break anything. I sure wish the old girl had a decelerator pedal. That is the one luxury I wish it had.

It really won't make heat until its working hard, or harder than you have so far, Coke is right, it may never really achieve real engine heat, won't necessarily hurt it.

that 2-71 is more or less made to run full throttle to have power . the hand clutch is like the decelerator would be on newer machine. 
 As you need hands and feet both to run machine and bucket or blade - you would run out of appendages fast IF there was another pedal . 
 Somehow it seems on my FD5 which is pedal steer there are 5 pedals - right and left decelerator , 2 brake /steer pedals and a center pedal that disengages both steering clutches and applies brakes. I find myself trying to cross my legs sometimes as seems to have the wrong foot in the wrong place for what I want to do next.

Yes, since I can remember my dad always said keep those detroits at full throttle. We had a Marco screening plant also that had a 271 and it would always be run full out. The 318's we had in our Michigan loaders, international(ducs)  and even the 671s in some of the loaders just wouldn't be worth anything unless they were full out and they all wanted to be there. Even though they were always screaming and probably account for some of my hearing loss these days they were always reliable motors and really didn't have any down time.
Funny about the foot placements...Ouch I think the only other machines I found to be crazy to run were some of our old cable Bh's and front shovels. Wow, those things built strong bodies for sure.
