 Topic: Pull-type combines, galvanized only?

Did AC or any other company sell a pull-type combine that was not painted, only galvanized steel like the Gleaners? I've spotted one in a fence-row, but it's too far away to tell what it is.

Alot of the early combines were galvanized. Rumely, Avery, Baldwin, Deere, and Holt come to mind.

I have seen other brands, there is one in the trees a couple miles from me, I think it is IH but not sure, too much snow to look now. I think MM made galvanized too.

Gleaner pull types were built i know up into the mid 50's. Compltly different than an AC, ill try to find a picture of one.

Most threshing machines were galvanized too. Depending on how well you can see it, it could also be a threshing machine.

I think by the '30s most companies started using regular sheet metal and painting it company colors. It seems like it would be cheaper to use galvanized metal rather then paint but the bean counters of the day may have thought different. Plus if you painted it the company colors it looked like it belonged with the rest of the machinery sold by that company. Gleaner, on the other hand was known for using galvanized metal from the beginning.

The last Geaner pull-types, if I'm not mistaken, were the P80's built in 54' & 55' I think. Allis bought Gleaner in 55 and stopped all Gleaner pull-type production. My brother has a P80 with Allis-Chalmers decals. I've got to get pics up here of it sometime soon.

The one I've spotted is flat across the back like an All-Crop. Maybe it is an All-Crop that's been outside so long the orange has worn off.

I have it on good authority that some of the Roto-balers, combines, and pickers that were produced by Allis after WWII contained some aluminum sheets because it was easier to obtain after the war than sheet steel. I had an early Roto-balers with aluminum hopper, and I have seen combines with aluminum sheets randomly assembled next to the steel sheets. Maybe the "galvanized" pieces were actually aluminum? Just a thought!

Our 47or 48 model 60 was painted but the paint peeled of in big sheets and it was galvainsed under the paint.

I found an orange painted aluminum belt pulley that fits my C & B. Wondered what the story was on that. Was on a farm with only an all crop, no AC tractors, ever.

They were still painting the new Gleaners silver over galvanized metal last I checked. I haven't checked in almost ten years. You can paint galvanized metal if it's prepped right. It's not as hard to paint as aluminum.
Remember the old AMC cars that were galvanized and then painted. I think our old Beretta car may have had some galvanized parts and I'm pretty sure All Crops are galvanized under the paint.
