I have been told you could go inside of a rotary mowers gearbox and change places with the gears that are inside without adding or doing away with any gears and change from 540 to 1000.Has anyone on here done that? If I could do that it would be cheaper than changing my pto on my AC 8070.Any help or advice???

Whatever brand/model #  of cutter you have, call an Implement dealer that actually sells/services them and they can tell you. I imagine SOME can do this, while many cannot. You'll still have to adapt to the large 1 3/4" shaft on the tractor regardless.

Dr.Allis I'll check on that. They should sell a 1000 pto end that would slip on the shaft where the 540 was on the out going shaft of the cutter right? Thank you for your help.

Like Dr said, it's going to depend on the manufacturer and the model.  Some had gear boxes you could easily change out parts to go from 540 to 1000.  The woods B320 is one example that was a little more complicated, as the difference was both the front section of the gear box and the input shaft (it was a smaller gear, so the front cover for the 1000 rpm batwings set the gear lower down than the 540 models if I remember correctly).  Also, if I were you, I would buy the yoke with the 1-3/4" 20 spine 1000 rpm section and change that out on driveshaft instead of using an adaptor.  If you have a driveline with an equal angle drive, you will mess up the geometry with one of those adaptors.  With a CV driveline, you could probably get away with it, as the driveline geometry is not as crucial (assuming the shaft is no where near bottoming out).  That being said, the yoke probably won't be much more expensive than a GOOD adaptor that can handle the power.  Hope this helps a little.

On my Hesston PT-10 mower conditioner, the driven shaft from the right angle gear box runs about 735 RPM. There to change from 540 to 1000, you could turn the gear box around. Speeding up 540 or slowing 1000. If the maker didn't plan for that, speed changes aren't so simple. The op manual should say if that conversion is practical. If the gear box does change speeds its probably not symmetrical inside to allow moving gears, but would need more space for the slow speed input gear if the output gear was the same, but in a bevel gear box that changes speed, the input gear for a different speed would have a different bevel angle so you'd have to change both gears and with the need for setting up mush, its probably simpler to replace the whole gear box. And that may be the only way practical, if the maker thought that far ahead. Many a mower has only a 540 gear box because its intended for use with a smaller tractor.
