Let me start by saying this is my first time trying to work with AC row units, and plate-type planters in general. I'm fairly used to newer-ish finger pickup and vac planters. Bear with me on this long post. It's going to be the 4th of July and I'm still trying to get soybeans in after 15" of rain over the last month... And I've never planted beans before, all the equipment is new to me, so there's a lot of learning going on. Maybe this thread will end up helping someone else in the future, too.

I have been doing all of my population testing by turning the planter drive wheel one revolution, taking the circumference of the tire, and getting seeds per foot out of what has been dropped during that one revolution. Drops are fairly consistent and I got the sprockets I needed to dial it in for my target.

When I go out to the field, it's dropping about half of what it should be. I don't think I'm missing half the seeds when I dig a 10' strip to count seeds. There are noticeable gaps in the drops (typically 3-5 beans per drop) so I assume it's skipping during say that 10" distance with zero seeds in the ground.

First thing I did was rule out tire slippage. The drive wheels are covering the distance I would expect during one revolution (~66-67"), so not the issue. Chains and sprockets are new. I replaced the pinion gears that drive the big gear under the seed plate. Also replaced the pinion shaft bushings and the bearings for the big gear. I'm fairly confident that is all in better shape than 90% of 74 row units in existence.

I think that leaves me with something in the plate/hopper itself. Two things I can think of:
1. In my "1 revolution in the air drop test" I am not replicating the exact speed of the drive wheel. I'm probably not that much slower, since I'm planting in 2nd gear half throttle, but no way am I exactly matching that. Was there any kind of "speed limit" for the plate provided by AC? I didn't find anything in the 74 row unit manual I have.
2. I am using a B-SOY 3X plate from Lincoln Ag. This is about the smallest cell bean plate I could find. I am doing 20" rows so I needed to really back off on the in-row spacing since I have more rows, to keep my population per acre the same. I noticed the knocker doesn't hardly get into the cell since they are so small. It mostly rides on top of the plate. Is it possible this is my issue? Pictures below showing it, as well as an original AC soybean plate where you can see how the knocker would enter the cells pretty deeply. Maybe the knocker isn't doing much, and when there is a cell with the soybeans fairly well wedged in, they aren't getting knocked out and never drop out of the cell. It's almost like I need a different knocker. I have one that was used with the milo plates I have, but it wouldn't ride well on the Lincoln Ag soybean plate.

Also... I'm all ears if anyone thinks of something else that could be the issue!

Don’t think the rolling knocker is your problem all it does is push seeds out of the plate that maybe a little snug
Put a small amount of seed in each box and run it for a little or turn it by hand then easily lift it off and turn it upside down undo the plate so you can see the seed plate and see if any seed are hung it if there’s none hung in the plate then the rolling knocker is doing its job
We’d always check our planter on some gravel road or another hard surface pull it slow then go back and measure the distance between the seed to check our population
Looks as if you run the original Allis plate you’d get a higher population

When I run it up in the air with just a small amount of seed heaped up over the cutoff tongue side, all of the cells come out clean on the other side of the mechanism, and the seeds are dropping. I guess I could do the same thing in the field, and try to drive about one revolution of the plate, and see if any of the cells remain filled after they pass through the mechanism. I would probably be moving slower which might not replicate field conditions.

That's why I'm trying to avoid the AC plate... that is going to drop a pile of beans. I haven't tried to do the math yet but I'm not sure I could even slow it down enough to do what I need.

It’s been several years since we ran a 74 unit but are you going by the book value for population if I remember correctly the book value is either half the actual rate or maybe double it’s been so many years since we ran a 333 planter maybe someone on here that has worked with them more recently can chime in or maybe it’s the sprocket tooth count I just don’t remember sorry I can’t be of more help
Those units are pretty much bullet proof once you get the right combination of sprockets and the right plate and around 5 mph is a good speed

WJohn, more than likely your planting travel speed is too fast for for the planter’s chain drive sprocket(s) setting?
In theory, when seed plate is slowly rotated(your hand rotating drive tire test ~ 1/2 mph?), the seed has more time to fall into plate cell, more time to singulate, & more time to drop to seed trend, etc…?
In actuality, you drive 4-5-6mph & planter grossly loses time for all events to happen.
Seed size & seed lubricants (graphite/talc) can affect actual population numbers too! More than one would think.

Not changing seed size or adding seed lubricant, just keep playing with your drive tire sprocket(s) until satisfied.

I second what AC7060IL stated, more than like your travel speed is way too fast. We had a neighbor years ago that keep his IH plate planter, everybody had switched to Cyclo Planter or JD 7000. He would just slowly plodd along with his Farmall 460 and his 4 row planter in what seemed like 1st gear, maybe 2nd but throttled back. Never saw any ‘skips’ or bare spots ever in his fields.
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

The book value was useless since it was in pounds and for the AC plate with the gigantic cells. That's why I did all of the testing for seeds dropped per wheel revolution = ~66-67" of row planted. No, thanks for all of the input you've had. I'm all ears to anything people have to say. I am way under 5 MPH.

Thank you sir. I really don't think I'm going too fast, but I'll let you guys confirm... I am in ~half throttle, 2nd gear in my CA. 2nd gear is 3.5 MPH at 1650 governed engine RPM, under load... Obviously this is just about no load, and closer to 1000-1200 RPM, so more like 2.5 MPH tops?

The seed plate rotates about 6.5 cells in the ~66-67" (let's call it 5.5') distance it takes to make one drive wheel revolution. I wouldn't think the plate is spinning too fast at that speed, but again, with no limit from AC in the manual, I'm not sure. I have seen IH manuals that tell you the fastest you can spin the plate over a given distance for good performance.

I have had a very, very light dusting of graphite present for all tests.

I could flip the sprockets around so that the drive sprocket is way larger than the driven. I can see if I still have skips with that setup.

20” rows right? What seed spacing is it actually planting?
Reason I ask is 70,000 seeds per acre can sometimes be adequate, given a weed free field &/or drought conditions?

Assuming they are press wheel driven row units, check sprocket tooth count on driving & driven sprockets. Regular chain or extended pitch chain or flat link chain. I remember back when I used 78 row units, the chain was extended pitch, but the sprockets were for regular chain. Made it somewhat confusing picking correct number of teeth for sprockets required.

Going off of KSU recommendations and neighbors, everyone says I want to be over double that for around here (hot, dry, planting late in season, etc.). I think 70K would work if I were further north. These are the newer roller chain units. I have just been including both sprockets when I do the math, since it's just a ratio at the end of the day (i.e. 20T/24T = 10T/12T). You just have to make sure you don't halve the tooth count on one sprocket, i.e. count them both the same way.

Thanks. That is what I am starting to wonder... That maybe those original AC soybean plates had massive cells for a reason, and this might be the reason?

So a quick/simple population math.
43,560sq ft is one acre.
Divide 43560 by 1000 to reduce numbers for ease = 43.56sq ft(1000th of acre).
Divide 20” row space by 12”/ft = 1.67 ft.
Divide 43,56 by 1.67 = 26ft. REMEMBER 26! So every row’s 26ft is a 1000th of an acre.
Now multiply the # of seeds planter drops per ft x 26ft ( 3 seeds x 26’ = 78). That’s one-1000th.
So Take 78 x 1000 = 78,000 seeds/acre.
If germ is 90%, then 78,000 x 0.9 = 70,200. That could be fine?
No disrespect to KSU, but have they ever tested your farm, your soils, your climate, your seeds, your planter, your agronomics, any of your current situations,,, etc??? Agronomic mindsets are kinda like setting planter seed spacings, take it as a ballpark figure then play/deviate to your farm’s satisfaction.
Soybeans can/will compensate. If there’s extra space, water, sun, soil nutrients,,, they are “kings at compensation.” Probably biggest challenges for them is weeds & deer (wildlife feedings). Seems we’re all over planting for the d@m deer!!

Never planted beans with the configuration you have, but those cells in that plate look very small. With plates for beans, I’ve used a JD 7000 plate unit, and we called them “slobber plates”, you don’t singulate beans with a plate. I think any speed at all and you cell simply isn’t picking up seed. Like you said, there’s a reason those original plate cells are the size they are.

I got out and tried with the original AC plates... they were very, very close to matching my hand spin test in the air. I'm putting down the right number of seeds/row feet to get my target population.

Either those pockets are too small to consistently pick up seed in the Lincoln Ag plates, or the knocker isn't able to do it's job due to the small cells. Either way, the AC plates worked well up to the 3.5-4 MPH ground speed I was testing in. They do occasionally dump 5 or so beans all together, which is unfortunate, but that seems to be the tradeoff. I am actually spinning both plates about the same speed (very similar ratio sprocket combos) so I can't imagine I am spinning the Lincoln Ag plate too fast.

I did discover that one of my row units was putting out about 30% more seed than the other 3 units... I found that the cut off tongue isn't moving freely, and had slowly gotten pushed upwards and held there. So I was able to catch that before planting as well. This is all a good learning experience.

Thanks for making me realize that slobbering is okay and expected here to work well.

The aluminum ac soybean plate 70 310992 was designed for the soybeans used in the 1950/60's. Beans were huge. Todays beans - these plates will hill drop them 4 to 6 at a time when the sprockets are slowed to get the rate down.  The Lincoln plates should work - they worked for us for decades. The roller should be floppy and ride on the plate. The cut off tongue may be your issue. These are adjustable via allen screw in the cap - screwing down on the setscrew will raise the tongue and let more beans in - screwing out on the adjustment will lower the tongue - it rides on the plate for corn. IT CANNONT TOUCH THE PLASTIC SOYBEAN PLATE - if it does it will fracture the plate. The 
recommendation was to set the tongue 1/3 the diameter of the soybean above the seed plate. If one unit was planting more then lower the tongue and vice versa. Remember as in a grain drill the seed plates for soybeans in a plate planter is basically a controlled spill.     Also, there are 3 different plastic plates - make SURE the seed will pass thru the cells. The worst flaw of the AC units were the scrapers on the double disc openers. Removing the scrapers - welding an addition to them and remounting them at almost a 90 degree angle will prevent soil blow out and leaving seed uncovered in damp soil. Just before the end of production there was to be a floating strap that ran beside the opener as a scraper and serving the same purpose as the gauge wheel do on the planters today. Anything that kept the soil from being scraped off the and thrown to the side.

tbran, thanks for chiming in with your decades of experience. You have used the Lincoln B-SOY 3X plate with success? Or have you been using the B-SOY2 (if you happen to remember)? My beans are 2250 seeds/lb. Usually 3-4 fit in the B-SOY 3X cells

My rollers are floppy and riding on the plates.

My caps don't have any provision for a screw. They are just a single cast iron piece with no holes in them so I can't figure out where an allen screw would go. Does that mean I have the wrong caps?

I did make 100% sure that the cut off tongues were clearing both the AC and Lincoln Ag plates... it was a very close fit on the Lincoln plates but not in danger of touching. You have me wondering if raising the cutoff tongue would help fill those small cells better when at speed... I was thinking of the cutoff tongue cutting/scraping anything above the height of the plate, but hadn't thought about it possibly funneling beans down into the cell as the plate rotates.

Noted on the scrapers. I do have the double disk openers. I think the ground is just dry enough that it will be okay but I'll find out tomorrow. I am more worried about the depth control from my testing (pretty sporadic). Finding some bands or adapting some other depth control feature is probably in my future.

Again, sorry for what might be an invalid comparison, but in my JD 7000 book, you set population by a combination of sprockets and weight per 100 beans and my plate cells were very large like the ones you’re calling original. Drive along a hard surface and dial it in by checking drop rate per distance. Usually either good or one tweak. So small beans, big beans, there was information for anything I ever bought.

The AC manual is similar except it has zero adjustment for weight/size of the beans. At least the chart tells you quickly if a given sprocket combo puts down more or less per acre without having to do the math.

I finished planting tonight. I did the math for 2 units of soybeans in the hoppers over a known area and I ended up putting down close to 190K/acre, which is an overshoot by about 10K, but I'd rather be high than low with rotary hoeing and planting so late in the season. It should be an interesting experiment. I will likely tweak things next year.

i MAY BE WRONG, but your hopper bottoms look like they have the stainless steel wear ring. this means the latest style - I don't know what units they were originally on - only the first have the cast iron cap. Every thing from the 72 units have the pastic cap with setscrew. Sorry for the omission of identification. I will have to go ot the farm and look - seems my plates were white? - I had better go look.

I think I will try those next year if this stand ends up looking to clumpy. I bet they would give better seed spacing/fewer dumped together than the 310992 plates, and those cells would fill/knock out (or whatever my issue was with the 3X plates) better than the smaller cells on the 3X.

Your hunch is correct on the caps... The cast iron caps (340469 cast into them) and 310992 plates I pulled out of an older planter with 50-series (?) row units. Those are the caps that don't have any provision for an adjustment screw.

When I bought these 74 units, they had different cast iron caps (343448 cast into them), which do have an adjustment screw but also had a very thin metal cutoff tongue. This setup appeared to be for milo/grain sorghum or other small seeds (there were filler rings, star knocker wheels, and Lincoln milo plates of one kind or another in there), so I had removed all of that from the row units when I set it up for soybeans.

Sounds like I should buy some of the new plastic caps so I can adjust the cast cutoff tongues for next year, although I didn't have contact issues with the plates this year.

190 k is sure a lot, but you didn’t hurt anything other than your seed bill.

The first time we planted beans, dad got all confused in the manual. I just started planting, he said it was all set. I drove a while, thought dang, looks like I need seed already. Remember, first time ever planting soybeans. So I topped off seed, went a while, needed seed! What the heck? Got the manual, started looking, saw how dad set it up. I started asking questions….got his number, and I said, then what? Times 4 because a 4 row planter? He says yes! I said um…..doesn’t work like that! Thank god at the time I only had a 4 row planter and it was a six acre field!!!   We put down close to 400000 as I recall, about maxed out the sprocket ratios. They turned out ok. About average yield. Just LOTS of seed per acre used!

It's on the higher end of what is recommended out here, but kind of like your 6 acres... this is just 8.5 acres this year, so what's another $39 bag of seed, or two, right? Good thing you questioned the old man. Seeding rate recommendations are a little different down here with the high heat/low moisture, lower-yielding environment compared to what they probably are up by you. But 400K for sure would be unheard of, ha!

I forgot to mention another thing I did notice and address was that the plastic bushings at the bottom of the hoppers that the seed plates/adapters rotate in, turned out to be very worn. Got new ones from AGCO.

And fingers crossed the depth control seemed to be working adequately. I put them down about 1.75-2.25" deep to make sure they have good moisture. This is a conventional variety from a local seed house that had far better emergence scoring than any of the GMO varieties they carried. They were starting to germinate already when I dug a few up Friday evening.

Now that I have them in the ground I'm sure it will stop raining for the rest of the summer.

I would still be interested to hear from anyone that has personally used the Lincoln B-SOY 3X (yellow) soybean plates in an AC planter, whether you had good or bad luck with them. I am still wondering if there is anything I could have done to make them work.
