Looking for a 240 volt shop heater, prefer to hang it near workbench. Radiant, infrared, or what is best most efficient?

son bought a couple of these.. they are cheap and work good..... 5000 watts is 21 amps on a 240v line.

electric is 100% efficient......heats the air.. radiant/IR heat the objects not the air...
you don't say how big a volume you need to heat up to what temperature but if you tarp off the 'work space' to reduce the volume, you can get bu with a smaller heater.

Depends on budget, temp level, size, purpose etc….but the IR heaters make for a very nice environment. Steady and comfy. A big azz electric heater may be efficient, but IMO it’s got a harsh feel to it, and is quite uneven, all the heat coming from a concentrated place.

Radiant is the only way to go if you are using the shop intermittently. It heats the objects not the air. If you are in the shop for an extended period of time the warm objects begin to gradually warm the air.

A mechanic I worked with has 3 like shown in a 40 x 40 x 14 concrete block bldg in his farm shop. 2 point at the end with doors & 1 in back of bldg blows at North wall. He says they're set on medium setting most of time. Says far cheaper heat than the old oil-fired furnace they replaced.

1) if you'll be painting you NEED warm air ! IR/radiant won't do that.....
2) a 5KW electric heater draws 20 amps @ 240 volts,so be sure wiring is 'up to code'.
3) that 5 KW heater( 17K BTU ) will cost me $1 CDN per hour to use. That's why I had an 80K BTU natgas furnace installed in the garage. It's cheap to run and FAST to heat up.

I have a project at a plant in Nebraska. There is no heat or insulation in the mechanical room. The project will need to be grit blasted after which a protective epoxy coating will be applied to the steel surfaces. An electric heat source might be what the doctor ordered. No propane or kerosene heaters can be used. Fuel heaters leave residues which will inhibit good adhesion to the surfaces. Due to the proprietary nature to the facility, I am not at liberty to divulge any details about the nature of the facility, name of company or nature of the equipment to be coated.
