Hey all I just recently bought a (I think) 1977 ac 5040 that's been sitting for nearly 30 years. I'm currently going through the planning phase for when I get it home and so far my plan consists of pulling pump and injectors for cleaning and resealing, complete fluid change, resealing anything I see leaking, go through/inspect hydraulic hoses, see if I get luck and the rust on the rams will polish off, replace all hoses for the fuel system, then see if it will start/run/drive. Things I know it needs are tires at least front tires, the right side final drive resealed, fluids, possibly rear wheels due to being calcium loaded and I'm sure a sleep if other stuff that I'm forgetting or don't know about yet.
So to one of the points of this post what are things I should be looking at specifically on this tractor? Point two does anyone have the casting numbers for rear wheel weights for this thing? Or even a list of weights that will work based on model numbers of tractors? Google isn't coming up with anything aside from it was a factory option, and when I get around to new rear tires I'd really prefer to not have them liquid loaded for was of maintenance. Point three, are any of the online parts places better than the others for these things? I know at some point I'm going to want to replace some sheet metal if it proves to be a solid machine. Also to Segway off of that does anyone have a line on a good/decent grill for this thing? If I decide to start fixing it up I'd like to to be as proper as I can in terms of aesthetics. I'll work on uploading some pics of the t**d in question. Also before everyone throws things at me I only gave 500 for the tractor soni figure it's worth a shot to see if I can make something useful of it. |

First of all, welcome to the family. And just like any family, we are generally a helpful loving family with a couple of nuts and flakes thrown in to make it interesting.
Second, as you probably already know, a 5040 is a "badged" allis tractor. A Romanian manufacturer made them for allis and at least one other company (long) I know from previous posts that part availability was getting to be an issue so you might want to start with figure out what are the same tractors of different brands. I rebuilt a manure spreader that i pulled out a swamp so i will never tell anyone they maybe didn't choose wisely but you certainly have a task ahead of you. Good luck and have fun! |

Really just about any part is easy to obtain from several sources and as cheap as any tractor out there.I have several of those Fiat built tractors for parts too BTW.

5040 and 1265 Oliver were the same,AC didn't sell a 4 cylinder like the Oliver 1365 or the Long 560.AC should have instead of the 160.

Well if anyone has a proper grill and a non mangy steering wheel I'd be interested if pricing works out. Most of the reason I pulled the trigger on this one is because it seems like the 5040 is one of the better built of the imports and it seems like I can get almost every maintenance part online.
Oh and now that I'm thinking about it if anyone has a set of manuals (operators, service, and parts) I'd be interested in those as well. Since it's seeming likely that I'll be going through the injection pump myself due to being quoted 750-1000 just to clean/reseal it and I can get a rebuild/reseal kit for under 200 online, I figure it wouldn't be a bad idea to have at least a service manual on hand. |

Yeah I've seen those but they are the right grill for the 5040. They'll fit but it won't look right.

The 160 is a much better tractor than the 5040. The Perkins diesel is a great engine and it’s a good 40 hp tractor. Some say hydraulics are poor but no complaints from me. Maybe I got a good one.

I couldn't argue with a diesel tractor with a loader for 500 bucks. I figured it was worth a shot even if it turns out to be borked theres well more than 500 worth of stuff that could be sold off. |

Oh come on Gary, they both are red headed step children lol. Both have their loyal owners as we both are. I knew my comment would get you going. I know your a fan of the 50 series and I like the 160. Just so everyone knows Gary and I are friends, he has some nice tractors and a lot neat stuff on his farm. I have been fortunate to buy a few things from him. His Oliver’s are way cool. I will say my cousin has a 5050 with over 10K hours on it and says it has been very reliable.

Yea I like them both but its sure nice with those Fiat built tractors to be able to go on ebay and buy almost any part at bargain prices compared to other brands.If you're over around Harrisonburg my Oliver/Fiat 1365 4WD is at Charlie Lisky's shop.He's finishing up the loader installation for me.We got on a trade.Charlie has really gotten that going good since buying from Willie.
