Does anyone know of the details about a woman watching a tractor pull recently at the Union County West end Fair that was fatally injured when a tractor blew up? I saw the headline on online news and haven't seen any follow up as to what exactly happened and possibly who's tractor it was. The only TV news I get is a station from Lancaster, PA. and normally things like that would get at least a little air time.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.

A mother of two died in a “freak accident” while watching a tractor pull at a Pennsylvania fair when part of a vehicle’s wheel broke off during the competition and struck her in the neck.
Brandy Horner was killed Friday night at the Union County West End Fair in Laurelton after an “equipment malfunction” caused the exhaust wheel to dislodge and eject into the stands, striking the 33-year-old, according to Pennsylvania State Police. Off-duty medical workers and first responders on the scene tried to help her before she was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead. “It was a freak accident,” fair President Dennis Boop told PennLive.com. Though fair activities continued, the rest of the events at the pulling track were canceled “due to unforeseen circumstances,” fair organizers wrote on its Facebook page. |

was just reading about updates to exhaust safety a couple days ago. Couldnt say what organization but it was regarding clarification of rules to prevent exhaust turbines from ejecting like this. Seems that 2 - 1/2 studs must protrude into the exhaust outlet of the turbine. Old rules were 4- 3/8 studs/rods and now must be withing so many inches of turbine.... surely the housings are blanketed? sad that this happened to an innocent bystander...

Turbo exh wheel came off in turbo failure, and it is what struck the victim. There's a big discussion on pulloff about it. Extremely odd turn of events and extremely sad outcome!

I didn’t pull in our local fair pull this year due to being ill. Just days after this happened. I found out that I would not have been allowed to pull my stock XT in the farm class since I run a factory straight pipe and no bolts through the elbow. I guess my pulling days are over. I’m not going to modify what I farm with just to pull a few times a year. It’s getting ridiculous anyway, they have been combining hot farm and farm in the same class. And they wonder why no one shows up to pull with true farm tractors.

Used to be stock farm classes you had to have a straight up muffler or pipe no rain cap or bend at the top of the pipe so that anything exiting just went straight up.

That is still a requirement for all classes. Often it doesn't get enforced and that is changing fast due to this incident. However, for everything I've found out to this point the exhaust housing of the turbo itself exploded and went through the hood of the tractor. That is the first time I've heard of this in over 60 years. Often the compressor housing will explode, but I've never know the exhaust housing to explode. Yes the turbine wheel has been known to separate and go up the pipe. That led to the requirement of cross bolts in the pipe, which didn't have an effect on this particular incident.
As for pipes with a bent tip, why do those with them always have them pointed toward the grandstand?
