I started combining soybeans yesterday and can't seem to reduce the amount of clean beans in the tailings. I have the sieve open and the chaffer almost closed. The air is set on 4. I took the optional perforated screen out before harvest which should not have affected this. Thanks for any help.

Best results are achieved with the short finger (1 1/8") chaffer. I usually set it with a 3/8" bolt to start. If you use a corn chaffer (1 5/8") with long fingers, you will have to have it nearly closed in many soybean conditions. Lower sieve set to allow beans to pass thru and not much more unless you have a clean sample and/or have too many clean beans in the tailings. Air usually no more than 5 if the fan system is working correctly. Again different conditions can change this air setting. Ground speed too fast always overloads the tailings.

I have no experience with a "3" series, but 2 seasons ago we placed the 3/8" screen on the bottom and had the 1 1/8" upper and had no excessive tailings in beans on the F2. I must admit that when I installed the lower screen, I placed the rear mounting bolts in the lower of the 2 mounting location  , after relocating the correct set of mounting holes, the bin sample and returns GREATLY improved. Don't know if your "3" series still has the different mounting holes?? Have a safe harvest

Thanks, I will double check the hole location when I put it back together with the mechanic tomorrow. I tried everything mentioned above and in the manual to no avail.

If you are getting beans in return, they are not getting through bottom sieve fore some reason, not open enough, sieve plugged, or over loaded.
I would also take a good look at fan. Vannes full of dirt, twisted, choke shaft twisted, or dirt in housing under fan. Open choke wide open and see if choke is hitting stops on both ends. Then shut it down and see if choke is same distance from fan on both sides. Choke may not be where gauges in cab say.
I like more air than the Dr. does. (no disrespect) MACK

Just started beans yesterday at 5 PM and with the R-50 I finally set the air down to 4. With it at 5, I was blowing a few out in lower yielding areas. Conditions were good. Everything was fit to harvest.

I was cutting dry beans yesterday with the L2 and I had to cut the air back to about 5 for the same reason As the Dr. if you getting too much tailings open the lower sieve a little more.

Try this;
1.Set fan to fastest setting.
2.Open front chaffer (top screen) about half way - a good 1/2” & rear chaffer strip more ~ 3/4”?
3. Close Sieve(lower screen).
4 Harvest just 25’, then stop & shut it down.
5. Go to Sieve(lower screen) & open it slowly until you hear beans fall.
6. Watch return amounts & adjust accordingly.
Assuming your bean straw(stems) are propertly going over walkers from rattle, then any unthreshed pods will fall thru to return and grain sample should be excellent.

Thanks everyone. I have to admit what happened. We decided to remove the bottom perforated screen with the tin cover to try to stop the occasional leak I have where the front of the shoe meets the frame. We didn't realize what we did to the grain flow! Screen back in, voila no more excess tailings!

Grain leak in that area is worn out rubber belting underneath the shoe.
Make sure wood slides are in against the side of the cleaning shoe. Loosen bolts and tap them in with a hammer.
