My CA has the original 6 volt positive ground system. I got to thinking, how do you hook up a charger without taking the cables loose? I don't remember reading that in any of the manuals and don't want to blow up a battery.

Just connect charger + to battery + and neg to neg. Might be best to not set the charger directly on the CA cause some chargers have the case grounded to neg. Also be sure to use a 6v charger.
And as with all 6 volt systems make sure you've got heavy cables and clean tight connections.

Just like John says, set the charger on the floor or something other than the tractor, then connect it like you would for a car paying attention to polarity. If you're still positive ground, connect the neg to the battery and the pos to a bolt on the tractor. Whenever I need to charge up my CA, I connect the neg to the post on the starter switch and the pos to the braided cable coming out of the battery box. That way I don't have to open the battery box.

Ruined 3 chargers before I discovered what John recommends. Now either set on the ground, or use heavy gloves to set the charger on. Anyone know how to fix a shorted out charger??
