some of ya know I bought a 1957 d17 series I with henry loader and back hoe that the engine was stuck and sat outside for 5-6 years. But finally after a lot of tinkering the d17 is finaly working. I managed to dig out several hickory stumps 8 I think. (about 20 to go yet) she smokes bad, so no mosquito's around. burns oil around a quart every couple days, guessing it will need an over haul this winter. I purchased new tilt cylinders from surplus center. Thanks to all that helped with questions and issue's I've had. I'm sure there will be more questions later. sure beats trying to dig these stumps using a 5020 with a loader.

Lets see some pictures, does that hoe come off easily? One thing to check on those old tractor backhoes (any brand) is the ale housing to transmission housing bolts as they tend to come lose and/or break.

pictures will have to wait, got almost 2 inches of rain and now the shameless machine is coming down. not sure if it's easy to get the hoe off, haven't tried. might not be to bad to get off, but getting things lined back up might be tricky. thanks for the tip I'll check them bolts.

dump a quart of ATF, in, next time she's low, might help un-stick rings, if that's all that's wrong with the smokin situation...

Seafoam has always worked for me and everything that shows up on my place get's a good "bucksnort" in the oil to clean em' out before a full fluid service and put to work. Worth noting that a early D17DIV treated with Seafoam cleaned all the seals so well that the front and rear main started leaking on a tired old gal so she is parked until I pull the trigger on that engine . . . .

I'll give the atf a try if that don't work I'll try the seafoam. I'm just guessing but I think it probly has a broken ring but I'm all for an easier and cheaper fix lol. engine was stuck twice now, once with the previous owner when the exhaust manifold leaked and then it locked up again when sitting. the fella before me put a new exhaust manifold, manifold gasket, head gasket, etc. on. he acutally pulled the head to get the engine unstuck. I was luckey and just had to use a mixture of diesle fuel, pb blaster, ect. in the cylinders.
