My mechanic says that I have a few bad injectors, so I am going to replace them all.

I have a 1980 model 7010.

Is this a straight-forward job, or are there any tricks involved?

Thanks,
Roscoe.

Quite easy if they all come out without the sleeve.  I have had one come out with the sleeve and it was on a 7010, other than that not hard at all.  You may want to consider having your injection pump at least tested if not overhauled at the same time as the injectors.  Need not buy new just have a reputable shop repair your old injectors.

It is a pretty simple job.  Make sure and watch if the injectors come up with or without the little copper washer/ fire ring.  If they get lodged in the head, you can use a 5/8 course thread tap to catch them and pull them out.  Be careful not to break them when pulling them out (pull straight with lots of WD-40 or similar), and dont cross thread the lines when putting them back on.

No copper washers used on 7000-7010-7020-8010.

Oops.  Sorry!   I just assumed a 7010 had them too.  Thanks for straightening that out for me.  Roscoe would have been digging for those rings for a LONG time.

Thanks, Dr. Allis.   How are they sealed? O-Rings?  Metal seats?

They are sealed with a copper sleeve instead of washers.  By going to the sleeve, it was supposed to keep the injector cooler since the copper was in direct contact with the coolant in the head.
