 Topic: ? for MN classic car owners

At the risk of getting political, I read a Newsweek article where MN legislative leaders are proposing limiting use of classic vehicles to weekends and special events. My question is these vehicles are registered under special plates and what advantage is there to doing so?

I'm pretty sure it's the collector plate group they are targeting. So Grandpa can't take his classic care down to have breakfast with the guys Monday through Friday. I'm sure it's a money grab to pay for poor financial management and excessive spending on other crap. Any car after being registered for 20 or 30 years they should just pay a onetime plate fee in my opinion. Any lawmaker voting in favor of this should be unemployed in the next election.sorry maybe this should be moved to the political section because that's what it is.

In Wisconsin a classic car plate you only pay one time no yearly registration. The only restriction is you can't drive it one month something like January or February can't remember without looking. But who drives there collector car during the Midwest winter. Nice thing with the collector plate is it is always on the car and you don't have to renew it so if it sits in a garage and you only drive a 100 or 1,000 miles a year it's no big deal. But some people drive there classics more.

The state of Minnesota has done some incredibly stupid things recently and now they are trying to fix the problems with out admitting they created the problem.

MO has Historic Plates. Are mileage restricted from Home base where can only be trailered out of state if greater than twenty miles into adjoining state. Is not truly monitored but other states do have power to ticket. IIRC total miles per year is also monitored and restricted . Same for ‘F’ or Farm tag truck Plates. Known a great deal of people bought ‘L’ or Local only Truck tags years ago, not certain if even offer those any more. Were limited to 50 miles from Home.

I'm sure that every sate treats this issue differently, so check with your home state for details. Here in Maryland the law says "for occasional use". Vehicles must be 1999 model year or older, after a vehicle becomes 60 years old it qualifies for a permanent plate with a one time fee. No pre tag inspection needed or annual emissions testing required. However as with any vehicle driven on the public roads they are subject to random spot safety inspections.

Wisconsin rules for a collector plate are 20 years or older. Not for generally daily transportation. And they require that they have another licensed vehicle. And it says limit of 4500miles per year. I think they are targeting people that drive them daily. But if you have another regular licensed vehicle you already payed your fees unless your wife or family member is driving one vehicle so what's the difference.

As of now no change but then MN Legislature is still in session .
The Democrats came up with the idea collector , pioneer , and other special registration plates needed to pay more for the fact they can afford more than one vehicle
Then same group in 2023 raised the cost of plates and put a new depreciation formula into place - along with that they charge sales tax on MSRP of vehicle (Window Sticker) not on what you paid - also vehicle drops in value 5% a year over first 5 years - NOT Bluebook or appraised value .
Now the other part Democrats propose taking present formula and going X 3 on tab fee. As right now a $45,000 sticker price costs $966 a year for plates , and sales tax of over 8% plus local taxes . Oh and a yearly fee of $20 wheelage tax for living near certain cities or in metro area .
Why all my motorcycles have collector plates - all over 20 years old and all mad3e by companies no longer in business -

Minnesota Classic Car Plate (Collector Class)- Cost: One-time registration tax ($25), plus low fees for single/double plates, and sometimes a one-time "in lieu" tax of $150.
