This may be a dumb question to some of you, but I can't figure it out. I was reading the rules to an organization and all the diesel classes have this rule. Could someone explain it?
Exhaust will have 2- 5/16" bolts as close to the elbow as possible at a 90 degree angle from each other and no more than two inches apart. |

The bolts are to stop or slow down turbo parts if one should fly apart, without causeing an exhaust block of too much

Around here they also have a no curved stack rule. Should anything fly out, it will go up and not out into the spectators, for about the same reasons.

Correct, they are there to stop the exhaust wheel from coming out of the stack. I have the elbow off our D-21 where the exhaust wheel came apart. Went straight back and chewed straight through the elbow and bounced about the engine compartment.

So they bolt all the way through the exhaust and form an X inside?
