I have had my early 190 (not xt) diesel in the shop having the fuel system put back together and just got back to running period (it hasn't run for probably over 10 years now). Anyway the mechanic was able to get it onto the dyno today and give the engine a good workout. It pulled 77 horsepower by the dyno readout, so its about spot on. Engine runs much much better now and does not smoke like it had been doing. After I watched him pull it down we talked a little bit and then he asked if I wanted the bad news. I told him I suppose so. Anyway he picked up a handful of metal pieces and showed them to me. Turned out it was the teeth off of fourth gear. Fourth will have to be replaced. What am I looking at to fix the fourth gear problem?
Thanks
Adam

3rd and 4th were out on mine, and is now in process of being put back together. I bought a new aftermarket input shaft for 3rd and 4th gear that was much cheaper than AGCO. Also need a new shift fork as the old one was completely worn (contributing to its problems) - this was really rich. In addition to that, I replaced all of the bearings and seals in the tranny and rear end while I was at it. After 40 some years, you can tell that these tractors were used. The total bill is not in yet. Parts wise, I think I am a bit over $1000.

What is the serial number of the chassis?? If it has small 2 3/4" rear axles, the tranny parts may be real hard to come by.

It is a 65 model. I was thinking 28?? was the serial. I wondered how hard tranny parts would be to find for it.

well i have one with the 2 3/4 axles and was having the same tranny problem 4th was messed up the best way and cheapest way i found was to buy a blown up 190,190xt and just bolt your front end over on it. that means from the clutch forward thats what i did. |

I think alot of the gears are still available Adam for the early transmissions. If your ring gear and pinnion are shot then if you want to go new you are forced to go with the udated heavier ring gear and pinnion. Fixing it requires a split job and a transmission tear down. You will have to know what you have in the transmission to get the right parts ordered, I learned that the hard way, I ordered a third gear ahead of time for my 190 according to the serial numbers and found out that mine had been updated when we got into it.
