I've always done the following...
login.
goto 'member control panel'.
goto 'file manager'.
select 'new upload' (kinda upper left area ?)
then choose picture on your puter......2-3 steps
then 'upload'.
that will store the picture on this server,almost forever too !
I never post a picture directly from my puter or 3rd party sight, always save on this server.
when you want to 'post' in a message, you click on the green icon  in 'options', find it, get it, post it....

all this from memeory but most of the steps seems right.
