    Posted: 13 Mar 2022 at 8:59pm
I have an old TLB with a Detroit 3-53 engine and it's tachometer is missing from the dash. I found the old cable jacket which drove this thing tucked behind the engine against the firewall. I cannot find where this originally connected onto the engine at. There is no drive assembly on either the camshaft, or balance shaft to connect the drive adapter to; only blanking covers. I've never seen them driven anyplace else myself and wondering if anyone else has?

Thanks,

Has always been off a cam, engine likely replaced and the drive lost to time at some point as most don’t care when a gauge quits.

Nearly all DD cam gear ends have a drive spline or coupler capability on the old 53s. Just have to order new gaskets and pull covers to validate if still there and then order a tach drive cover from someone that still has one as no longer produced. After that os getting correct direction of rotation adaptor.

Thanks. Hard to say about the engine as it's an older TLB. I've only seen the cable driven types driven from the cam, or balance shaft on the inline engines also but thought I'd ask.

I installed a new alternator yesterday with an "R" terminal and planning to install an electronic tachometer to fill the hole in the dash.

Be aware that drives and tachs come in different gear ratios.

Yes, and thank you. I have several of the 90 degree adapters with varying ratios, but didn't see a drive on this engine so figured I'd ask.

I have ordered an alternator driven tachometer which should arrive next week. These are driven by the "R" terminal on the alternator rather than mechanically.
