D17 tractor clutch

I cant ger my transmission in any gear  The gears will grind  l can put the tractor in gear with the clutch depressed and with the engine shut down very easily   Then start the engine and with the clutch  still depressed the tractor will want to move forward slightly and stop   I can then leave the clutch out fully and the tractor will then drive forward
I can take it out of gear and I cant shift into any other gear without shutting down the engine and shifting into another gear
Feels like the clutch is not completely engaging or dis-engaging   Can the clutch be adjusted  to clear this or is the clutch just worn out   The clutch never did slip but it did jump out of second gear from time to time.

Second gear has nothing to do with the clutch.  What's the history of foot clutch problems ??? Used to work just fine a year ago and now it doesn't work right ?? Or you just bought the tractor and find out there's a problem, and there is a problem, yes.

Mice stuffed bell housing full of nesting material on my D17, causing that problem. Got enough mouse piss in the throughout bearing to take it out, waiting on a split now.
If you are at all handy with the power director, you could still use the tractor to some extent, but I wouldn't call it a "forever type thing.:

Regarding the foot clutch, the clutch has always caught almost completely at the top of the pedal travel   There has always been a slight grinding of the first gear and reverse gear when engaging but nothing major
That has been the history of the clutch since l bought the tractor
About 7 years ago. Till about 2 weeks ago when the gears would not engage at all unless l shut the engine down

Did you ever try to adjust the clutch when that started 7 years ago?

Sounds to me like a simple clutch adjustment would take care of that. Must be a clutch rod there you can adjust...... Just my 2 cents.

By your description: " it almost completely caught at the top of the pedal travel"...7 years ago.  That in itself says there was zero or near zero pedal "free-play" (there should be minimum 2 inches) so the throw-out bearing has been spinning all this time. I'll bet now your pedal acts differently....not at the top, but catches down lower, right ???  Which would tell me something has changed and not for the better and probably if there is now pedal free-play, the throw out bearing and clutch fingers are wiped out. Get a flashlite and look up in the inspection hole from underneath.

The inspection hole at the bottom of the bell housing is about the size of a large egg.  Hard to see anything
Somewhere in earlier posts l read that someone suggested adjusting the clutch pedal linkage,  l took a couple of turns clockwise and first gear slipped right in. I didnt have time to check further but l will in the AM

Yup. Small hole. Need a good small flashlite. No cover?? maybe a mouse nest inside now. There's a reason for a cover. Worked once ?? Maybe for a while. Then, may act up again. Clockwise rotataion moves throw out brg away from the fingers which is more free play and less clutch release. You don''t say if the free-play changed from the past.

So as l said l turned the linkage clockwise three turns and the gears are shifting very smooth and easily.  The free play in the clutch remains or feels very much the same as it was before.  The clutch still catches close at the top of the of the pedal. May not be quite right but far the time being its working. As you said it may not last.  Its time  to bring in wood for the winter and the tractor bucket makes things so much eaiser, and lm behind now.

You should have 2" of free play in the pedal. You should adjust the linkage until you can move the foot pedal 2" before it meets stiff resistance

There's always the scenario on an older clutch disc, maybe because it's a loader tractor,  that there are broken damper spring ends floating around inside the flywheel cavity area. When this happens, the problem can come and go, just depending on when the floating debris grabs the clutch disc trying to spin it, even tho you have the pressure plate released. The cure is a new clutch disc obviously.
