How wide can a guy go on the front of a D17 wide front? Currently have 6.50 on but would like to go to 7.50. Needing floatation for loader work.

It looks like it would work, but would have very little clearance to the top of the spindle. Of course, the tires cost more...

I went to 11L16 on my MF-135 and then my 4020. Now my 4020 using those rims has 11.00-16 that are taller than the 11L16. I had to go to 8" wide rims that had additional offset to keep the tires from rubbing on the tops of the spindles. I think from the originals that were small offset that I went to an additional 2-1/2" offset. Its been nearly 20 years since I did that. The 11L16 were wagon tiers with not much tread. I found them a bad idea when cultivating or rotary hoeing because their little ribs didn't steer well. The 11.00-16 are four rib. I went to them because the tractors had a sturdy loader that put bit loads on the front tires and the originals were too narrow for the load. I also believe the wide tires are much better for the spindles because they don't make holes in plowed ground like the original 5.60 or 6.50 tires did and they didn't fall into furrows so much. I moved the 11L16 from the 135 to the 4020 the same time I moved the loader. The two tire changes on the 4020 raised the front axle about 4 inches and that actually leveled the tractor frame, but made climbing up to fill the gas tank more work because the top of the front tire went up about 8 inches. I'm not interested in changing back.
It may be that the present rims on the D17 are turned with the offset out so the rim centers are closer to the spindles which is a common condition planned to reduce twist on the spindle, and with the wider tires they may be turned around to move the rim centers out so the wider tires clear the tops of the spindles. Any tire store would probably be able to get them new. If you want used, start looking at all the equipment in local farm scrap yards. |

Larger tires are fine but I would not turn the original rims out. Had that on our D17w/ loader and loader lg round bales. Had a couple of the rims break out at the lug holes. Tut the replacements one the right way with no problem on heavy loads.

Old buick rims fit perfect. My father has ran bigger floatation tires forever on his d 17 with a dual 325 loader.
