I am dealing on a 1966 D17. The engine was overhauled a couple hundred hour ago. It jumps out of high 1st and High 3rd gears. He wants $3600 for it. I have never done any tranny work to a d17 other than putting in a new clutch. Can you give me some idea of the parts and labor and cost of repair. Is it a shifting fork problem or something more major? I know it is not uncommon but I have never had to deal with the problem and do not know if it is worth it. Thanks

Requires a complete transmission teardown for a proper fix. Set aside around $1500 for parts alone if you are doing the work yourself. Shifting fork is not really the problem. More so the gears, shift collars and shaft bearings that have been ground and worn down. If you are paying a shop to do the work, expect to pay around $2500 - 3000 give or take.

I just priced 3th gear for a wd45 and it is over !,000.00 from AGCO that changed what I'm going to do this repair.  So you might pull the top cover and look inside price and shop the parts before you right the check for the tractor. I'm going to look around for after market.

WOWWWWW...wd45 3rd gear was around 700-800 2-2.5 years ago.that's just crazy..

What do you mean it jumps out of hi first and hi 3rd? Are you talking PD OR TRANSMISSION?
3RD is common but not 1st. MACK

Like said if its a transmission problem it'll jump out in low range just as quick as it will in high range

If it's the power director jumping out, sometimes you can get away with just adjusting it paying strict attention to having the correct design and thickness of shims. If it's the transmission jumping out, that's usually from grinding gears. The gears don't slide, there is a collar that slides back and forth between gears that meshes with teeth that look like splines. Those splines get worn at an angle so torque on them can push the collar to the neutral position. The fix is replace the gears with the bad teeth. Like Don says, gears ain't cheap...

Set aside $3000 for the repair that Meeks $3600 for the tractor not a good deal. Engine overhaul is much easier than trany work. 1 st And 3 rd are differant gear sets and differant shift rails. Find another tractor.
