 Topic: D17 IV Clutch Pressure Plate

 While baling today it got progressively harder to get the pto and transmission in gear. I looked inside and see this. Looking to gain understanding aboit the mechanics of what went wrong.

Clutch pedal went to zero free play and the throw out bearing was spinning all the time and failed as a result. Time for a new foot clutch and everything else related. Had to be making a squealing noise at some point.

Yes, when I was nearly done raking I did hear the squealing start, made 8 round bales and couldn't go on. Lots of clutch work with the baler. What do you mean about zero free play in the foot clutch ?

Considering that I don't see the release bearing up against that finger in the picture, your bearing may have locked up. You may still have the correct free play, but the fingers would have just ground away, like in the picture, every time you stepped on the pedal. Regardless, you will need to split the tractor and completely service the clutch assembly. Surface the flywheel and it may have even damaged the piece that the release bearing sits on.

Like Mike, I too am curious about "lots of clutch work". I would think that if there was a need to slow the speed of the tractor while baling, the power director would be the "clutch" to use.

I should have specified I'm running a 8420 Case IH round baler. In order to dump I need to back up. Power director is great to stop and put twine on but without a bale kicker have to back up.

Ideally, you always want a couple of inches of freeplay (or more) and the new clutch should release near the bottom of the clutch pedals stroke.
