D17 gas won't start

I got a D17 AC that was my wife's grandpa's. I know nothing about it. I trun the key to start it and the starting sylnoid makes a buzzing noise. Charged the battery to 100% and put a new startinging sylnoid on. Samething happens. The sylnoid makes the buzzing noise. Any idea on what the problem could be? Thanks in advance!

the solenoid clicking means your getting power to it to feed the starter... Since the starter does NOT engage and assuming the battery is good, then you have a couple of potential problems...

First is the battery cables are old / dirty/ corroded and to much resistance to current flow. Take the cables off and wire brush the ends, sandpaper will work.. clean the INSIDE of the clamps that go on the battery. May have a black oxide on them and not really a heavy visible corrosion... Clean the terminal at the starter and its cable. Make sure everything is clean and TIGHT.. Things can get rusty / corroded after setting for years..

Second possibility is the starter motor is WEAK or the engine is STUCK ?  Can you engage the PTO shaft and rotate it with a pipe wrench and drive thru to rotate the engine ?  Is the engine free to turn ? ... If you pull the starter out , sometimes you can bar the motor over with a  big screwdrive prying on the ring gear.. Do you have a hand crank, or access to the crank pulley on the front of the motor ?  Might be able to rotate with a socket...

Another possibility is to remove the spark plugs to make the engine EASY to rotate..See if the starter will spin it then.. Might need to put some penetrant into the 4 spark plug holes if things are "TIGHT" from setting.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I'll second Steve's notes, and add that, as long as the battery terminals are clean and tight, you can use a common jumper cable to bypass the battery ground wire (to a clean spot on the starter motor) and if it jumps into action, you know that the regular ground cable/path is at fault.  Repeat that for the positive side, and it'll suggest wether the starter cable side is having problems.
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.
