What causes the slevees to drop in the block? I took the head off mine, head gasket bad, and they seem to be flush with the block. Getting a straight edge to check for sure.
Thanks, Randy

Part of issue was design. The orig service manual specs called for sleeve stand out to be plus or minus .002 ..... which we all know will not work...

The lip is so narrow on sleeve that I would think that even with plentiful standout, they would struggle to hold up. Every time they heat up and cool down those thermal cycles make metal "work ". Have heard it said that some survivors that were warmed and cooled down gently never developed a problem. Possible I suppose but have no experience.

The "survivors" never worked hard like most of the gas tractors did. Of course the supporters of those problematic engines will argue that to the teeth, but the fact is they were doomed from the first start-up. The sleeve flange is sooooo small, there's just no way it will stay put. MACK argues the fire rings were too soft, and that may be true, but if the flange was 100% larger, there probably wouldn't ever be an issue. You could overhaul a gas engine 2 or 3 times and never worry about sleeve sinking. Most Buda engines never made it to a true overhaul before a head gasket was blown and the sleeves were already low.

The hole in the top of the block is what i am most concerned about. And yes, the sleeves are flush.

You need a dial indicator on a sled to check your sleeves, a straight edge won't do it accurately. Dr Allis is right, the sleeve flange is just too narrow to really hold up. When Buda was building that style of engine, it was a bored block. When A-C took over they changed it to a replaceable sleeve. The bore spacing didn't allow for a large enough flange for a mass produced engine, combine that with 50s coolant technology, and possibly a fire ring not hard enough, and they were less than reliable.
They can be fixed with a custom wide flange sleeve from Darton and some expensive machine work. Custom machine work = expensive...

I can sell you a set of fire rings that will stop head gasket blowing and sleeve sinking.
Sleeves don't just sink because of narrow flange, but the fire rings are so soft, that sleeves start jumping up and down, beating flange down. A better fire ring will keep sleeve from starting to move so no more pounding of the block. A hammer won't damage any thing until you start the up and down motion. MACK |
