I think there is a snap ring that has to come off before the axel wil slide out. Its on one side or the other . If you take it off axel should slide out.

The O.E. shop manual shows a snap ring on the inside of the bull gear and one under the inner bearing cup. I'm going to bet that they will be the type needing "duck bill" type pliers. Once you get that ring next to the bull gear out, I'll bet the axle slides right out.

If you have both rings out, the bearing and outer seal are all thats standing in your way. You should be able to drive it out with a babbit hammer.

Thad...As I look out today, I think of that 100+ evening in MS last summer. If you need to "ice that axle".....Merry Christmas...Dale

It won't come easy. Screw a old bolt in the end of axel and beat the ---- out of it with a big hammer or sledge. MACK

Get as much thread as you can down in the axle before you beat on it.

I have removed the flanged axle from the HD-3 and 615 which I suspect is the same design and after the snap rings are removed, I have used threaded rod to push against several flats on the outer axle housing. It sometimes takes some pressure to pull them from the bearing.

YEA DALE YOU ARE RIGHT WAS A HOT MS ORDEAL.
WELL GUYS THANKS FOR THE INFO, I WAS WONDERING IF THE SMALL BRG. HAS A SNAP RING AND SHOULD THAT SNAP RING BE REMOVED TO ALLOW THE CUP TO COME OUT? I BEAT ON THE BOLT WITH A BIG BRASS DRIFT PUNCH AND A SLEDGE HAMMER WITH NO LUCK. I THOUGHT ABOUT USING A PORTA POWER AND PUSH AGAINST THE DROP HSG ON THE OTHER SIDE BUT I WAS A LITTLE WORRIED ABOUT BREAKING THE HSG OR CRACKING THE MOUNTING FLANGE. YOU KNOW THIS IS BAD I HAVE DONE THIS JOB A MANY OF TIMES BUT WHEN IT'S BEEN YEARS SINCE I HAVE DONE ONE YOU KINDA FORGET, !!!! THAT'S BAD |
