I bought my uncle's D15. It has a howling noise coming from the rear end. I remember it did this when I used to use it but it is worse now. It does it in 4th gear when it is pulling but not when it is going down hill. Any ideas?

If every compartment is full of oil, it sounds like the typical ring and pinion gear whine(road gear only)....some are VERY noisey....and as soon as you crest a hill and remove the load the noise pretty much goes away.

1964 D15 II - Acts the same way - only in road gear & only when there is a load on the drive train.
