  I have a 4 row planter, 78 units on 333 frame set up for no till. I really like the planter,however I am not impressed with how well it closes the seed trench. My question is would it be feasible to convert it to common drive and engineer a better closing system?

I have several fertilize drives, transmissions, and jack shafts laying around. I know its not the same as the original common drive but I think it could work. Also would like a way to convert it to to a v wheel closing system.

Could you expect better seed spacing with a common drive?

Not to be smart but just buy a Deere 7000 and you will have what you want. You could even paint it orange.Wink  I had an Allis 600 and Dad had a 333 and when I bought a Deere I was impressed with the improvement in my corn stands. Tom

What is your ground speed when planting? Those plate type planter units don't like to go fast (lot of skips if over about 3.5 mph).

They made different style press/drive wheels that you might look into changing. It was also an option (I haven't seen many but we have a planter with them) to get the gauge wheels next to the openers (much like JDs) that would also help

Maybe it would be feasible to lengthen the trailing arms to move the press wheel farther back and then graft a set of Deere type closing wheels ahead of the press wheel. Honestly, the MaxEmerge unit opens the ground and closes it up about as well as any row unit out there even 45 yrs after it was introduced to the farming world.

This will fix your issue - look at a Sunflower grain drill - put these soil control strips on each opener or fabricate  and weld two 1.5 by 12 inch strips to the v shaped opener guard on the front.  The openers have a wide angle on the opener the soil is moved to far outward and lifted from the seed trench = this will fix the issue.  We have built literally hundreds for all the old AC units.

Do all of the 78 row units have a pair of small cover discs in front of the rear press wheel? I have a 330 with 78s set up like this. I have been planting beans and have been watching for areas that didn't cover well. So far it's doing a great job from what i'm seeing.

Small spring loaded covering discs were an OPTION for 78 series planter unit.
