So I want to upgrade our accounting system at work from long hand to quick books. To do that I'll need a computer.

I've been looking but there are so many tech terms that I don't understand.

Any way I found a brand new computer on Facebook market. It's an old customer of mine that selling it. She bought it in December for her grandkids and they didn't want it. So she was willing to sell me it for $200. It's an hp stream. She said the model number was 14-ds 10010 ds does this sound right?

What do you guys know about this computer. She said it has office 365 on it but from my readings I'll have to buy that after the free trial. What can I install that would do the same thing. Will this work for quick books?

Might you guys use something different then quick books that does the same thing.

there are a few variations of the HP14 --- but probably about $275. new ...

Personally i think you would be better off going to BEST BUY or local Computer store and talking to a sales guy for an hour.. Tell him what you are trying to do... You will get a LOT Smarter in an hour.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I agree with Steve 100%. My experience is that The people at Best Buy are pretty savey about what they sell. After you tell them what you want, that will better guide on what you actually NEED. AFTER you get it home,,,then get your children and/or your grandchildren to fill in the rest,,,,,ClapClap

O ran quick books for my excavating business for years - now they have went the route where updates get expensive and older versions won't run right from my understanding .
Same with Microsoft Office - I have run it for many years in many different versions but now they want control and have you pay yearly to use it .
When i took the building inspection classes they required Office as one requirement - wanted you to buy the Student version for class - ended up the version i was running was 2 releases older but had all programs where Student version was missing 2 programs that were needed for class - told instructor I would use old version even though it was missing a couple features in a program and would note the missing features in assignments .
Look at the recommendations that Quick books says is needed - and go from there ,
After figuring out the minimum you need - check with Microcenter and see what their prices are .

I recommend you buy an Apple Mac laptop for any internet usage instead of a desktop or other virus burdened computers. It also can easily synchronize with your Apple iPhone.
Via a USB storage stick/card, you could transfer any tax files to/from Mac for internet messaging.
Keep any non Mac computers off the WiFI/internet to assist them from easily contacting any online viruses.

Ok...
1st Q. How 'fancy' do your books NEED to be for the IRS ?
2nd Q . How 'fancy' do your books HAVE to be for YOU ?
3rd Q. Is the entire biz run from ONE bank account ?

I've run my incorporated biz here in Canada, past 30 years, with a SIMPLE spreadsheet. The basics are dowload the biz fiscal from the bank as a CSV, save into spreadsheet. Add a column for 'type or use'(GIFI codes here in Canada). Just 7 or 8 types. Once done, it automatically 'fills in the blanks' for 90% , rest is entered manually.
Takes about 2 hrs to be 'government ready'......

The problem with 'canned' software is 1, trying to jump ship ain't easy ! 2, cost of updates !! cost of NEW PC/OS cause new program 'needs' new  stuff !!!! grrr...
The KISS system works for me.........

There is no benefit going to a MAC,and I've had both since dayone (did memory upgrades on the 1st MACs). ANY 'puter tied to the outside world needs some kind of 'protection', cpet for my energy control systems....they are hackerproof.

just use a simple spreadsheet  with whats in win. 10. --- dont know why anybody would want their business on a computer ---but everybody is different!
Ours goes on paper--STAYS on paper.
You really dont want your stuff on computers so some hackers can get all your info and use it against you!--- that's been done millions  of times!!! LOL!!!

Go to Dell.com.  Click on Deals.  Go down to Outlet Store and it will give you a choice between Home or Business.  Refurbished and scratch and dent are the same as new.  I have bought so many computers from this location I can't remember them all.  I have never had a catostrophic failure with a Dell.  I was the IT guy at work and we had 30 desktops and 6 to 8 laptops.  I was purchaser for all of our IT equipment.

Another good investment would be a couple of external drives.  You can get 1T for very cheap. 1T = 1 Terabyte.  You will probably never fill one of them, but with two you can keep everything backed up on both.

SSD is a good thing to look for.  It is a solid state hard drive.  No moving parts to fail.  I have converted one of my laptops at home and have the drive to do the other.

Laptops are getting more popular.  I have one on my coffee table and one on my desk.  Easy to pull out the cord and take it where you need it.

Good luck with your choice, but Dell has always been so reliable I just gotta highly recommend them.

As far as your choice for software, maybe ask around at other businesses your size and see what they are running.

With quick books you can make invioce, print checks and do all your banking. You just need someone to help you learn all of it. I am still in the learning prosecess.

I set up QB so when i entered a item - say septic tank it put the price on invoice
same with pipe , pumps, and service call
Each piece of equipment also had hourly rate programed in so you just entered name and hours and it prices it .
It takes a little to set it up but it works great for invoices for jobs and also for snow plowing where I had the 60 or 70 customers all listed - prices set for commercial and residential rates were separate .
I didn't do inventory so never set that part to keep track of it .

The most important feature in my opinion is a Solid State Drive (SSD).  Old mechanical hard drives are on their way out.  The SSD is several times faster and only a little bit more money.  You will not regret it.

The Senior Center here offers whole bunches of classes.  Lots of them are computer related classes.  Might check that out for learning quick books or maybe the local community college.

2nd most important item.... buy and install TWO USB flash drives ( 8 GB or better).
Label one 'oddday data',other 'evendaydata'.
At end of every day using QB,do a FULL backup of data and program. On 'odd' days, backup to the 'oddday data' flashdrive, even to the even.... You can have any 'puterkid' write a simple 'ap' that'll do this AUTOMATICALLY for you(it's really a 4-6 line 'batch' file).
With ANY 'accounting software' the 1st rule is have a backup, the 2nd rule is have a 2nd backup ! If the primary harddrive crashes, you'll have accurate records, easy to put into another PC ,and be 'up and running' in seconds......
