Well, I finally got a chance to look at my CA and why it surges. I tried spraying some stuff around the carb and manifold to see if there were any leaks...but the tractor didn't do anything when I sprayed! Gas tank is clean. the fuel line is all good. I don't know what makes my CA run so rough. It won't run properly without the choke closed halfway. If you open it up and open the choke....It surges. What would be the next check?

If it runs better with the choke on and there are no vacuum leaks in the manifold or carb, bout the only thing left is a fuel restriction. If it's not in the tank or line, it must be in the carb. either a float set to low or something plugged up.
Do you have a HOT spark? |

Hows the compression? Valve adjustment? Spark Plugs? Points/Condenser? Do you have an anti-surge spring on the throttle rod just ahead of the carbuaror? Start by taking the compression, and if you can, pressurize the cylinders to check the condition of the valves. Then check out the spark; should be a nice crisp blue. Then check out the fuel; start at the sediment bowl (make sure the screen is clean and fuel flows nicely), blow out the fuel line and the nipple on the carb. You should take off the carb and clean it out using brake cleaner, compessed air, and fine wires. Adjust the float and make sure both ears are level and they are not in contact with the sides of the carb bowl. Todays gas is not too kind to the old carbs when it sets there for a few months. Finally, check out the gap between the govenor rod and carb rod (just behind the fan on the left side). Disconnect at the joint, move the trottle lever to the wide open position, pull the throttle shaft from the carb to the wide open postion. You should have 1/16-1/8 gap between the two. Bend the govenor rod as necessary to obtain this gap.
