 Topic: Brakes on a Chevy C-60

Working on my Dad's 1974 Chevy C-60. Brake fluid leaks out between the master cylinder and the fire wall inside the cab on the floor mat. We tried to fill it with fluid to get the brakes pumped up enough to get it to my shop a mile away. We could not get at least a semi-hard pedal. Even cracked a few bleed screws. We never heard the vacuum booster kick in at all. Pedal goes to the floor.
I assume the master cyl. is shot? Seals in the plunger leak?
Does the vacuum booster kick on when the fluid reaches the proportioning valve?
i have never done any extensive brake work but willing to try while i am stuck at home riding out the virus.
Appreciate any help!

Master cylinder is bad. I had several of those back in the day. The brakes need to be adjusted up good. I don't know what you mean about the vacumn booster kicking in. I cannot remember mine making any noise.

On this truck for some reason, we could hear the sound of the vacuum "sucking" when the brake was applied. Weather the truck was running or not. Almost sounded like air brakes but they are hydraulic. Made a sound like "PSHHH" when you pushed the pedal down. The pedal was good and firm and you stopped on a dime.

What Tom said, your master is bad. I take it the vacuum booster kicking in is the whoosh sound it makes when you step on the pedal? I would not worry about that. Be sure and bench bleed the new master for air. It should have fittings and hose included. Remain masters are cheaper than you can buy the parts.

good luck finding a new or rebuilt master cyl. i also have a C60 that needs one. haven't found one yet for it...nor a rebuild kit.

get a new master don't have it rebuilt.. Had a pro shop(best in town everyone said) rebuild the MC of my Willys 4WD PU. 3 weeks later, with a ton + of topsoil,came down the 'mountain access' with NO friggin brakes.... great..zigzag under the train bridge and 1000+ pumps later had a wee bit of brake. Next day went into local auto parts store with MC, said I need one, old guy comes out with a very,very dusty box, says $100, I said $50..save you a trip to put it back onto the top shelf for another 50 years.... hour later Willys was on the road ! LOTS of C60 Google hits for master cylinders BTW.....

REBUILD your master cylinder. There's a place in White Post Va. that will put in a brass sleeve that will never rust again. I've done my 50 Dodge car and 2 50s era Dodge trucks as well as the wheel cylinders. About the same price as a NEW Chinese master cylinder. I'll never bother with the NEW ones form China again. It easy to find them online, White Post Restorations

Thanks Paul! Checked out thier website and it looks like the way i'm going to go. I like keeping OEM parts on my equipment and this looks like a good way to do that.
